Call Number: 200.3

Reference Type: Encyclopedia

Description: This encyclopedia designed for upper elementary and early middle school students provides information on world religions.

Price: $19.95

Relevance and Relationship: In most American communities, religious diversity exists. Students hear information about different religious groups on the news, specifically in situations of extremism, but may not have personal connections with the religion. Students should have the opportunity to research religion in a concise, easily understandable format, such as this encyclopedia.

Purpose: The purpose of this book is to encourage students to understand religions they do not know and to promote religious tolerance. This book would be a great addition to the reference section in the library and could be utilized for class reports and projects.

Validity: This book is recommended by the School Library Journal.

Format: Print.

Arrangement/Presentation: This encyclopedia is organized around the six major religions, but includes information on less popular religions. Each religion section has information on religious practices and historical background. There are illustrations and photos for each religion.

Diversity: This book directly addresses religious diversity. Knowledge of different religions promotes tolerance, which is essential for students living in a diverse nation.

Call Number: 200; 200.3

Scope/Content: A concise , well organized look at six major faiths.

Accuracy/Authority/Bias: Lion Children's books claim to be a Christian based publisher whose books are translated into 200 languages.

Arrangement/Presentation:Information is organized by topic rather than alphabetically giving the middle school learner a relatively comprehensive review of each religion's history. Topical organization will make this a great first stop toward a deeper examination of any particular faith. Information should be relevant for many years.

Relation to Similar Works: There are no other resources like this one in the collection.

Timeliness/Permanence: The basics of a religion do not change a tremendous amount.

Accessibility/Diversity: Since the book addresses six major faiths, it is a very diverse book.
