the pure devotion that some people have to perfecting a craft is dangerous. i really liked the portrayal of how sometimes you can lose and yet win and win more than anybody.

my father is always drawing sports and life parallels and citing impassioned examples of famous sportsperson and it annoys me so much lol. but it's so, i don't know, it feels naive (?) to even say this, but this character spent his entire life to perfecting his craft and a random guy comes who has god gifted talent and all his practice seems pointless. that's just unfair? but i suppose that's how the world functions as well.

when i started reading this series, i was fully prepared to dive into a sports heavy, all training and grit, type of story. but this is so much more than that. in fact, i feel like this story is about everything but boxing.

i hope Jean is as proud of himself as i am of him <3

this book reminds me, that everyone was just once a kid. lol, it sounds funny and silly when i put it like that but how often do we forget that?

My favorite webtoon I've ever read, even one of my favorite fictional stories ever. I cannot praise this enough. It's so beautiful.
90% I don't like "drama" genre webtoons/books/manga but everyone was reading about how good it was so I tried it and I'm so glad I did.

I don't even know what to say about this volume because I went from experiencing some of the strongest secondhand embarrassment I have ever felt because of a character to feeling extremely creeped out because of a character that I really didn't know if I could keep reading.

So let's talk about the first half (or first quarter) with Qasim! I could not stand this boxer ever since we met him. I found him to be very annoying and extremely rude and disrespectful. With all the talk and pride this man has, I NEVER would imagine how the fight would go down. I won't say much more but it was shocking and where I felt the second embarrassment.

Now the next part of the story was something else! I have liked Jean despite not knowing much about him, but the more he tries to "level up," the more I felt some nervousness about his character. That really hit the highest it's ever been when he decides to fight other opponents to help him reach his "ideal." The things that his opponents said about him were extremely creepy, especially when you see their words come to life on one page. Nervous laughter doesn't even begin to describe how I felt…

The ending was awesome though! I continue to deeply love the art of this series and how emotions are conveyed. So many panels I really really liked because of the use of color and the zooming in of expressions. It really gives this interesting depth to the situation, especially since there are no words being spoken.

My favorite moment is Yu's fight with the "mysterious kitty"! For a series that doesn't really have any humor, I was surprised by that lighthearted moment! I think it "humanizes" Yu because while I love his character, we still don't know much about him. Granted, we do find out WHY he is boxing, but he's so quiet that it's hard to know what he's feeling as a main character.

I confess I do feel a little hesitant to continue this series only because I am worried that the series will get even darker. It's very much a gritty sports story, which I knew starting this series, but it has only gotten more so (though with a lot less blood in this volume thankfully).

Definitely would still recommend this series if you want to see a VERY diverse amount of boxers with a grittiness that does not match the upbeatness of the majority of sports manga!

A continuation of the first 2, feels kinda the same as the last book.

There was however one part of this book that I really liked the message of. It was talking about those moments, like in baseball where a batter sees every stitch of the ball, or in basketball how someone who isn't known for dunking, manages a game winning slam dunk... then to go and do it again, they can't replicate it. That in those moments, are sometimes what creates world records that are never beaten, or those really weird random moments that are memorized in sports forever. As a hockey fan, my mind immediately went to the famous Bobby Orr picture where he got hit immediately after scoring the goal and he is flying through the air like superman celebrating, or like Patrick Kane's game winner for one of the Hawks Stanley Cups, where no one knew it went in the net except him.

That made me like this one near the end.

This series kinda reminds me of Baki a little. Maybe because of the semi-unrealistic fighting, plus the narrator towards the end of this volume going on a spiel about ‘athletes in history having certain moments of peak athleticism’ was very Baki-coded, haha.

I like how unexpected Yu’s fights have been so far for me. While the end goal of ‘Yu wins’ is obviously gonna happen, some of the details I thought were really interesting outcomes (e.g: Qasim’s exit and John’s surprisingly tragic situation). I’m intrigued by how the rest of Yu’s fight with Jean will go.

Also, I see Injae is on the cover of the next volume! Can’t wait for bro to come back. I want him to persevere, win a lot of fights, and catch up to Yu. I think that would be a fitting way to end the series, Yu vs. Injae.

I am literally so in love with this small guy it’s not even funny. It takes me about an hour to get through each volume and I try to keep it on my bookshelf for when I have a bad day because I know it will bring me good spirit. The way that the characters are drawn, story being told, And the activity happening are so interesting and make me actually want to watch real life boxing. I am so grateful for this book. And I love that there’s an Easter egg and this specific volume referencing other works by this author I thought it was really cute. And I cannot wait to learn more about Yu

Honestly peak, definitely best volume so far. Qasim is a character that I really enjoyed and seeing Yu break him down so quickly was crazy. Jean Pierre is my favorite character in the series so far, I found him absolutely fascinating and so sick and I’ve loved every part of his arc. It’s cool how it’s almost like a given that Yu is just the goat and we really don’t even spend much time with him, the series is much more about his opponents and what boxing means to them and how fighting Yu changes them

Qasim's part was not that good to me.. but Jean's story was something else.. the character is definitely interesting, the background story was not expected, yet it broke my heart. And I loved how the match ended.

Reading this series feels like an actual movie! It’s something about this series that it has the perfect balance of visuals and words. I don’t even feel like I’m reading. The story is being told perfectly through visuals. I have never flipped through pages so fast!

Another solid volume. I was not fan of the Qasim character - he was a a bit too ott - both in actions and design, so I was glad he was not in the volume very much. I hope we get more into Yu’s character soon.
