I am not exactly a fan of Kunieda sensei's artwork. Yet I find this manga worthwhile. It's rare to find Yaoi manga with depth and this one has spades. I like how the mangaka realistically portrays the various issues faced by same sex couples. I even find myself tearing up a little when the lovers was discussing about their future and one of them was worried he wouldn't be able to ensure his other half gets taken care of when he kicks the bucket if they do not have any legal bindings like married couple gets to enjoy. He was agonizing over how he could ensure his lover could legally secure his assets and estate once he is no longer there to take of of him.
Although this manga sounds serious but it wasn't all just about the heavy stuff as there are many lighthearted silly moments to tickle your funny bone as well. Oh how I wish Akira would stop wearing those gaudy, flashy clothing. *grimaces* His poor boyfriend is such a tolerant man. Hehehe

This volume introduces more about Akira's past - his mum is a REAL character and has a very dramatic side character (a former teacher of Akira's) make Kento and Akira reflect on their relationship.
I think the way the mangaka uses dreams in both volumes helps to keep the story tight and also to make it more understandable how their feelings change with their experiences (no long, self-indulgent monologues - we either get dialogue with some other character or those dream scenarios when they work it out). The dreams also make for lovely comic reactions on awakening, occasionally ^^.
I adored the look into the far future, a risky choice in a book aimed at fujoshi, I would have thought.

Creo firmemente que esté bilogia se convertirá en una de mis favoritas de por vida.
Y es que lo tiene todo, tiene amor entre los protagonistas, tiene comedia (me hizo reír mucho), tiene drama pero también hay esperanza, la trama fue llevada paso a paso sin prisa por lo que vas conociendo a los personajes, como es su vida y como se va desarrollando su relación.
De verdad es perfecta.
Y es que lo tiene todo, tiene amor entre los protagonistas, tiene comedia (me hizo reír mucho), tiene drama pero también hay esperanza, la trama fue llevada paso a paso sin prisa por lo que vas conociendo a los personajes, como es su vida y como se va desarrollando su relación.
De verdad es perfecta.

Akira has taken a permanent position with the school where he began as a sub due to the other teacher’s retirement. So now he and Kento work together every day. They keep their relationship from the people at school. Although Kento has introduced Akira to his grandparents, he has yet to meet Akira’s family. Then one day a flashy woman in a fur coat and sunglasses is standing outside the school when they leave, and Kento is finally introduced to Akira’s mother! That’s when he learns that Akira has a mommy complex, and actually calls her Mommy! Seriously?
She’s come to tell him she’s getting divorced… again. Akira isn’t even sure how many times that makes. It’s clear the pair dote on one another, but Kento is beginning to suspect the relationship is unhealthy. Turns out Akira’s mother had him when she was seventeen and he has no idea who his father is. When Akira leaves school early one day and doesn’t tell him, Kento searches for him, asking his mother if she’s seen him. She hasn’t, but she quickly guesses the nature of their relationship.
Kento finds Akira, who is hungover, and down, concerned unnecessarily about Yukie, whom Kento says is already in a new relationship and Kento doesn’t care because he has Akira. Akira is a complex man and Kento doesn’t always know how to take him. He realizes he’s had a hard life with his unstable mother and his childhood must have been difficult. And sometimes he and Akira seem poles apart. For example, when they end up going to a spring festival together, each is aghast at what the other is wearing. Still, no matter what happens between them, they seem to solve their problems in bed, making everything right once more.
They decide to take a Golden Week vacation but get off to a bad start. Apparently, Akira is a terrible navigator. To make matters worse, when Kento picks up Akira at his apartment, he finds another man there with him – his art teacher from middle school! And the man not only doesn’t leave, he comes with them! He and Akira sit in the back seat together, with Kento playing chauffeur. This is not what he bargained for at all! Not surprisingly, they get lost! When Akira spots someone and goes to ask for directions, the art teacher tells Kento about what Akira was like as a child, and how much he has changed for the better. When they finally reach their destination, they find they are all to stay in one room! Not exactly conducive to lovemaking. Kento and Akira become worried when the teacher disappears, which is compounded when his wife shows up looking for him and explains what is going on with him. Now they are even more concerned that he might do something drastic!
Akira’s mother is getting married… again! Kento starts bringing up the idea of marriage to Akira, and they fight over that. Kento wants a future with Akira, but he seems to be less than receptive to the idea. Akira provokes Kento, and finds himself in the nurse’s office with Yukie. Things get worse when Akira thinks Kento’s grandfather has died and Akira gets drunk and crashes the gathering. Will these two ever be on the same page?
I love these two guys, they are so sweet together. I like that they have their ups and downs, like any couple, which is exacerbated with the societal difficulties of being in a same-sex relationship. The picture of Akira as a sweet little angel is priceless! So is Akira’s dream of the future. What a wonderful ending! I am a sucker for a happy ending. I would definitely recommend this book series.

Future Lovers Vol. 1 art and story by Saika Kunieda is an older yaoi, published back in 2002. And, even though it's an oldie it is definitely a goodie. Kento Kumagaya is a high school teacher with simple tastes. Like most straight men, he longs for a wife, children, and a home. What he didn't bargain for is falling in love with another man. He proposes to his girlfriend and she turns him down flat and walks out of the restaurant. Naturally, he's upset by the turn of events, but fate has other plans. Akira Kazuki, an unrestrained, attractive gay man gets caught in the crossfire and then offers his condolences to Kento, after which they drink, and then wind up in bed together.
What makes this story absolutely awesome is the emotional dynamics between Kento and Akira, and the priceless facial expressions Akira makes. The mangaka did a superb job. Future Lovers really is a great story with lots of romance, humour, ups and downs and wonderful intimate scenes. I like that straight man Kento is the one to chase Akira. It doesn't happen too often that a straight seme chases a gay uke, usually, it's the other way around or the seme is gay. Especially, such an old fashioned, honest and sincere man like Kento. He is kind of unique from all the yaoi I've read.
Future Lovers continues in a second volume where Kento and Akira take their relationship to a new level. Short story Winter Rabbit is included in volume one while in volume two the artist adds a few pages of what Kento and Akira would like in their hundreds. Very funny. If you enjoy romantic comedies and strong, down-to-earth characters, I'm positive you'll enjoy Future Lovers. 5 stars!

I'm just a sucker for stories about the every day life in a longterm relationship. I liked the second volume more than the first, and I just enjoyed reading how these two, who're really very different, live together and love each other.

Like the prequel, Kaze no Yukue is a wonderful read. I loved Akira and Kuma (and Kuma's grandparents as well) and it's just interesting their relationship.
