It is amazing that this "Klassenbuch" - a collection of letters sent by a group of German classmates from when they graduated in 1932 all the way until their autumn years in the late 1970s - survived at all, given that it lived through the horrors of WWII and the subsequent division of Germany into East and West, having to be smuggled from one side to the other.

This makes it all the more disappointing that the rather clumsy presentation and editing of the book really detracts from the impact it deserves. There is a very light touch in helping the reader remember who's who, which given the number of letter-writing contributors is very difficult. Much of the historical context is given in the afterword, which in parts is very informative, but also just cuts off abruptly. Certainly for younger readers, or for people reading about this period of history for the first time, it would have been helpful to have the historical context dispersed throughout the book, and at the same time this would give the opportunity to give an update of where all of the contributors were at this point.

Kudos to the ladies who endured and survived the decades of hardship and still managed to find the strength to write to each other. For their sake, I feel this book deserves a better, more polished version - it is just begging for a talented writer / editor to let these stories shine.

Ich habe dieses Buch aus einer Bücherzelle mitgenommen, gekauft hätte ich es mir wahrscheinlich nicht.
Es ist eine Quellensammlungen. Die einzelnen Tagebucheinträge werden wiedergegeben, ohne sie großartig in eine Rahmenhandlung einzubetten. Dabei wurde sicherlich gekürzt und weggelassen. Die Reihenfolge ist chronologisch, aber mit großen Lücken.
Ich konnte mir die Personen schwer merken. Hier hätte man den Leser durchaus etwas mehr begleiten können. Denkbar wären ja Zeichnungen, Symbole oder ähnliches gewesen. Die einzelnen Schicksale sind dennoch interessant.
Menschen dieser Generation lesen das Buch sicherlich unter einem anderen Gesichtspunkt und finden sich oder Bekannte darin wieder. Junge Leser, werden mit den geschichtlichen Hintergründen allein gelassen. Ob das über Zeiten hinweg funktioniert, bezweifle ich.
Das Nachwort wiederum war sehr aufschlussreich und interessant. Kurz zusammen gefasst, erfährt man hier noch mal wichtige Aspekte der Geschichte.
Vielleicht könnte man das Buch nochmal überarbeiten, auch aus dem Blickpunkt der heutigen Generation heraus. Die Quellenausgangslage ist jedenfalls einzigartig.
