Sheila K. McCullagh had her first work pulished in the 1950s and then went on to write a number of children's books including the Puddle lane and the Buccaneers series.
Puddle Lane was a staple for all British pre-school kids during the middle of the 1980's. There was also an accompanying TV series, though it's just the books that I can vividly remember.
The reason why they stand out so much was the interesting approach of teaching children to read.
On the left-hand pages has the story for grownups to read aloud, whilst on the right is a simple sentence that explains that part of the plot for a young child to attempt to read. What also stands out is the cover colour coding with blue being stage 1 and the easiest to tackle.
The fantastical elements also appeal. In this case a Griffle (pictured on the cover) who has the ability to disappear. The creatures special skill helps a group of children who'd accidently thrown a ball into Mr. Gotobed's house.
Simple, cute and most importantly made a last impression having found some in a charity shop and wanted to revist them with my daughter.
