Harlech Castle

Rate this book
Harlech Castle was built on a concentric plan, and located on a rocky crag overlooking Cardigan Bay and framed by Snowdonia. The castle is considered to be an architectural masterpiece and has been perfectly adapted to the rocky landscape. Now recognised as a World Heritage site, Harlech was part of a chain of fortifications built by King Edward I to affirm his conquest of 1282. This full-colour guidebook explains the history and building of the castle and contains a tour of this magnificent medieval stronghold.

Harlech Castle is considered one of the best examples of Edwardian military architecture. More of a booklet--though entirely in full color with many excellent photographs of the castle from various angles--it nonetheless tells you most of what you probably want to know about Harlech Castle short of actually going there. It's published by CADW, and is apparently meant to be a companion to a visit. More than an overview, the booklet discusses the castle's construction and its role in Welsh history, particularly during the Wars of the Roses. It also includes a virtual tour of the structure and detailed floor plans of the entire castle, and a good cross-section of the gate-house. Those of you interested in Mediaeval castles, and you know who you are, should find this little book quite fascinating.

An informative guide to the history of Harlech Castle including the who, how and why it was built and how it has been used since. The text is clear and concise and written with the general public in mind and is well supported by the diagrams and illustrations
