A native Virginian, Sara sold her first published romance novel, FLASH OF DARK, an urban fantasy romance pitting vampires against the Fae, in 2009. Since that fateful day, she's published over 20 books in various sub-genres of romance, been generously honored with several awards, and saved the world from evil chocolate chip cookies.

Though she may insist otherwise, Sara loves the places her mind conjures and has always been fascinated by the strange, the unusual, the twisted and the lost (tortured heroes are her personal favorite). She is an action movie junkie, addicted to coffee and has been known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing RPG video games. Despite all this geekiness, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story.

Geeky IT girl meets up with a hot tattooed hunk is something every geeky girl fantasies about. In TAKING OVER ME, Allison is the stereotypical awkward techie girl who is just one of the guys. She knows her software and hardware. Her weakness is the same as any computer person - coffee, liquid gold. On her stop at the coffee shop, she meets Patrick. Patrick is one of two brothers who just bought the coffee shop. As a Good Samaritan, Allison helps Patrick with the coffee shop during a rush of customers.

Some Doms can sense when a person around them is a submissive. For Patrick, this is the case. He detects the hint of submission in Allison and brings it out in her. He's a Dom focusing on the D/s and some BD, but never the SM. The way Patrick brings Allison into the kinky side is so sweet. It's also intensely involving sex. His fun with orgasm control is a delicious fetish.

Ms. Brookes creates good characters. For those who are geeky, it's easy to relate to Allison. She's cute in her cluelessness about her appealing personality and physical attributes. Patrick is a patient Dom who gently brings out Allison's confidence. His protective trait as well as his gentlemanly manner can make many a woman swoon. Ms. Brookes spends a lot of time showing how each of the characters think. It's nice to see a Dom worried and not all knowing. It's also an accurate portrayal of a new to BDSM having a lot of questions.

While it was good to understand each character's perspective, it would have been nice to have more action. What would have made this story better is if it showed more interaction rather than talking about it. Sometimes, even the sex was more talking about it then actually experiencing it. This dials the heat down a bit in the story. Still, this is a sweet story and enjoyable. It's perfect for kinky readers who are just starting to read erotic BDSM. This tale is recommended as a Gateway to BDSM book.

Allison may be a geek, a technology buff who loves her video games and comic books, but she’s still one cool chick. My kind of girl, even if I don’t pull all-nighters playing Halo (now, all-nighters with a good book – that’s me). Unfortunately for Al – as her friends call her – she’s just one of the guys. Her guy pals don’t see her the way she wants to be seen: as a woman. That all changes when Allison rescues the barista at her local coffeehouse when his register quits working.

Patrick, co-owner and sometimes barista of Perfect Shot, is blown away by the girl who saved his day. Dressed in shapeless clothes with an easygoing, laidback attitude, Patrick quickly realizes Allison has no clue how sexy she really is. And he finds that incredibly sexy. He has to get to know her. When Allison offers to update the coffeehouse with new registers and a top of the line security system, Patrick jumps at the chance to see her again.

Dinner, drinks, and a movie marathon later, Patrick introduces Allison to his world. And Patrick’s world is seriously kinky. Bondage, toys, collars, cuffs, and nipple clamps – you name it, he likes it. He even converted a warehouse into his very own Sanctuary. An adult playground, of sorts, for himself and three of his best friends who also enjoy the kinkier side of life.

Even though Allison is taken back by the things Patrick is into, she can’t deny that she loves it. She never thought of herself as submissive, but she's thrilled and amazed at the things he can do to her body (as I am… as am I!). But both are hesitant to open up and say what they really want. And when they decide to meet each others friends, it becomes clear they live in two different worlds.

Taking Over Me was kinky fun and full of geektastic moments. And, while it didn't engage my emotions, I did like Patrick and Allison. Patrick gets major kudos for his creative – and cold – use of a toy. And Allison, well, she had me at Wonder Woman. I will admit that I was a tad disappointed when I realized the geek with some kinks was Allison. I do so love my hot, nerdy heroes. So, Miz Brookes, please please make one of the geeks with kinks a man!

Patrick is my least favorite kind of Dom. He’s the kind of all-seeing, all-knowing Dom that instantly knew Allison was a sub the moment he saw her in his coffee shop. (You cannot know this from just looking at someone!) The kind of Dom who says “‘I’ve learned that a woman should be shown exactly what her body is capable of, as it puts her more in touch with her sexuality.’” The kind of Dom who barely ascertains consent and never prepares his new sub for a scene before launching them into it. I can’t take anymore of this.

Characters: Allison is a 32 year old white IT specialist. She has a cat named Boolean. Patrick is a white coffee shop owner and Dom. This is set in Gatlin Falls, VA.

Content notes: workplace sexism, MMC’s sister-in-law recently left his brother, on page sex, D/s, bondage, public sex, masturbation, alcohol, dick size joke, homophobic insult, diet culture, gender essentialism, ableist language

Taking Over Me is the first book in the Geek Kink series by Sara Brookes. I chose this book because the summery interested me. After reading the summery, this story has such promise.

Allison is a geek, she would rather work on a computer than find a date. Parts of Allison are easily relatable to most women. She has a very believable problem, she is not seen as a women by the men she hangs around with. She is just a buddy to them. She is a intelligent, and fun character. She is not stupid in anyway.

Patrick started a coffee business with his brother Alex. Allison comes to the rescue opening day. She gets him to upgrade the computers. Patrick likes to be in control. Patrick comes across as the type of person that most women want. He is honest, hardworking and cares for the people he is around.

The chemistry between Patrick and Allison is off the charts. The sex scenes are hot and spicy. The only thing I do not understand why Patrick exploded when he did not like how Allison’s friends treated her. He did not take the time to get to know them.

I enjoyed the secondary characters in the book; I do hope that Ms. Brookes plans to write about them. There was nothing that could make this story better. Overall, this was a wonderful story. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

I liked the concept, but there were serious problems with the writing that made it impossible for me to read this book with any enjoyment. The primary problems were incorrect word choices and a consistent, bizarre omission of pronouns in subordinate clauses (and even if the pronouns had been there, there would have been noun-verb disagreements). I can sometimes overlook grammatical errors in my leisure reading, but not when they happen multiple times per page.

I made it about 30% before I realized that I was so distracted by the mechanical problems in the writing that I wasn't able to follow the story. DNF.

This was a very sweet love story with nice people in a cute little town. It was about that exciting to read as well. It is really too bad, as this story is right up my alley.

My main difficulty was the writing style; a lot of talk - internal and conversational - but not a lot of action. Some of the problems could have been resolved with a good editor. There were missing words and awkward sentences that hindered comprehension. Overall the story had a feeling of molehills to mountains - dramatic reactions to rather tame events, which left me scratching my head in confusion much of the time.

Good, not great. Hero and heroine were just over the line of “too much” for their issues, making them feel like clichés at times. That aside, I do love a nerdy heroine who enjoys kink. Good bones, ok overall.

Taking Over Me is an immensely satisfying story along with being super steamy as it deals with the BDSM lifestyle. This is a story about seemingly opposites attracting and the freeing nature of the BDSM lifestyle as a girl geek discovers her wild side after meeting a sexy barista. Allison has always seen herself, and been thought of by others, as one of the boys. She loves working on computers, reading comic books, hanging out with the guys for video gaming night, and dresses for comfort instead of attraction. She dates, but not very often. She's a strong-willed woman though who's comfortable in her own skin. She thinks herself way out of Patrick's league but he finds her fascinating. Their relationship goes from 0 to 60 on their first date as she's been obsessed with him from their first meeting. The excitement he represents and the fulfilling of her fantasies that he promises has her diving in wholeheartedly to what he offers her. He's a Dom and wants her to be his Sub in some very tantalizing sexual interludes where she is the center of his attention. As BDSM stories go, it's hot but not as graphic as some other titles I've read. There's usage of cuffs, collars, and toys but nothing leaning towards the more darker side. These interludes allow Allison to become bolder, like seeing a butterfly come out of its cocoon. She takes pride in being a woman as opposed to hiding amongst the boys. She's an admirable heroine who sticks up for herself and doesn't let her role of Sub in the bedroom be confused with her actions out of the bedroom.

Patrick's dealt with disappointment in his past as a sports injury changed his future. He now owns a coffeehouse with his brother Alex who's dealing with his own issues right now. Patrick is charming with a sense of darkness surrounding him. He freely admits to being a Dom on his first date with Allison and loves the sense of wildness he sees behind her controlled facade. He wants her to come out and play with him as opposed to gaming with the boys. He wants to remind her that she's a woman and proves it through numerous steamy scenes where her satisfaction is his goal. Seeing him join her in her geek world while joining him in his decadent one showed two people truly wanting their relationship to work and I found these scenes delightfully fun. Late in the story we discover Patrick's abusive past courtesy of his father. This fact came out of nowhere and rears its head unexpectedly during a ridiculous disagreement between him and Allison. It brings heretofore undiscussed fears of him becoming his father to light and leads to a Big Misunderstanding that is resolved quickly through words of wisdom from friends and family. The ensuing HEA is sexy and satisfying.

Along with numerous steamy and satisfying sexual encounters comes a believable explanation as to why an individual is drawn to BDSM. It shows a devotion to empowerment instead of weakness and makes these characters more self-assured. Surrounding the immensely likable protagonists comes an equally intriguing cast of secondary characters. Patrick's brother and his friends who also live the BDSM lifestyle left a lasting impression on me and I truly hope to see more of them as they have issues to heal from too. Ms. Brookes perfectly balances the physical and emotional aspects of this couple which makes their journey towards a HEA richly rewarding.

The moment I heard about this book I knew I had to read it. A story about a geeky girl getting down and dirty with a hot guy BDSM style? Oh yes please. I also really like Mr Brookes humor so I was sure I would love it.

Allison is a geek 24/7. She works in a computer/technology buisness and spends most of her free time in the world of Halo or another game that caught her attention. She's also addicted to coffee so yes I love this girl. I think she's one of the heroines I can relate to the most. She's funny and witty but also is very self concious. She's never seen as the woman she is- she's also one of the boys- a buddy you can game with but nothing else. She actually likes her life and the freedom she has but she's lonely from time to time too. She doesn't see herself as an attractive woman because most men just see through her. So when Patrick starts to flirt she doesn't get why. But her doubts vanish soon enough.

Patrick is a sportive and very very handsome guy who's now the new owner of Allison's favorite coffee shop. Women radiate around him- he sure can chose who he wants to take home. When he puts his eyes on Allison and her minxy figure he knows he wants her. She's something special in his eyes- something that should be cherished and loved every second of the day and he will happily do that. Patrick is smart, clever and also very open and straightforward. He doesn't like small talk and prefers to actually come to the gist of what he wants ASAP. For me he was a bit too frank at times. Yes, I know it's good to talk about every thing but some things should be handles with some more caution and sensitiveness. All his talking took too much of the emotional and sexual build up away. I prefer books to show rather than tell. And even though they mostly talked about feeling and thoughts it didn't feel the same as when they would actually show them more through actions.

The BDSM in this novel was not like the ones I usually read about. It's more of a detached way to show it, much explaining and talking before something actually happens. I think it's a more realistic aproach. I always thought it's weird to see someone embracing this life style out of theblue but (yes there is one) I think I like the unrealistic one more. It's just more sexy and enjoyable to read about. It seems I'm a bit shallow about this. The erotic part of Hardware just didn't grab me and I think it's because of the talk.

The story in Hardware is really nice- we have different plots that thread together. I loved how the characters interacted and looked out for each other. The witty convos are to die for and I loved all the pop culture and geeky references. This book really made me smile. Ms Brookes' writing has a wonderful flow- she writes exactly the way I like it: down to earth, the way people actually talk.

Hardware is a nice book about a geeky girl making her first steps into the world of BDSM, discovering her big love on the way. I loved the geeky part of the novel but the erotic part wasn't my cup of tea. Mr Brookes' writing si wonderful clear and down to earth. An author I will keep my eyes open for.

What do you get when you take one Dom, add a geeky girl, throw in some leather, computer equipment and a coffee shop? You get Taking Over Me, the first book Geek Kink series by Sara Brookes. This fun sexy story is filled with great characters, great sex and great coffee that will have you looking at your barista in a whole new way.

After reading several books by Sara Brookes I've come to the realization I really prefer her longer books versus her novellas. Why? Because novellas are just not long enough to thoroughly enjoy the characters she creates. Allison and Patrick are perfect! Not that they are perfect. Oh no, they are flawed with complicated baggage and have wounded hearts. That's what makes them so perfect and why I get so attached to them. Lovable underdogs. Patrick is all hunky and Allison, who is the super geek (I love it when the girl's the geek!) is just one of the guys. Talk about opposites attract! I found the building of the friendship into something more very sweet and real. And the sexual attraction and heat between them...YOWZA! Okay, I do have to admit I did rate this book 4-flames even though I don't think it should be but, because of the BDSM aspect, I cranked it up a notch. As for the plot, LOVED IT! It flowed smoothly with a nice build up and all the character introductions had a nice, natural rhythm. About those secondary characters, I simply adore them. Instead of being near blurbs in the story they are contributing factors and enrich the story. The added plus is I know this is a series and I really look forward to seeing them again in another book down the road.

To be honest, I read a the second book in Geek Kink series first so I know what's coming. However, now that I have read Allison and Patrick's story I have a better understanding of how this series is going to work. And, even though I think books can be read as stand-alones I really do recommend reading the series. So now that I have finished Taking Over Me I will bide my time by re-reading Rock Your Soul and anxiously wait for the 3rd book to come out.

I received this book from JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

Standing outside of Perfect Shot, the new local coffee house, on their opening day Allison is unsure if she wants to go in or not. All she wants is good cup of coffee but what greets her is a line of customers and one very confused (and frustrated) owner of the coffee house trying to operate the outdated cash register.

What’s a geek to do…? Allison walks up and goes behind the counter to help out.

Allison knows a thing or two about computers but when it comes to relationships she has struck out.

Patrick the owner knows what he see when he lays his eyes upon Allison. But he’s Dom…

How will this work you may ask, this one book you should pick if you enjoy tame BDSM scenes.

My thoughts:

I found the book to be intriguing to a point, as well as funny. The storyline was easy to follow along and had some interesting dialogue between the characters.

There were a couple of sections that I really found interesting but I am just going to share a few.

“’And here I thought size didn’t matter’ ‘No matter what woman say, it so very much matters. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to stroke your ego.’”

(Ok, Ladies mind of the gutter for a moment they are discussing the size of a computer memory…)

“BDSM, that’s an umbrella word, Allison. A catch-all used to categorize a lot of different things. Your immediate thoughts are probably not even close to the reality. Mainstream America…puritanical at best, while still being highly influential. “

“’What’s going on?’ ‘Our mother has decided I needed to hear the intimate details of her sex life because of what happened with Allison.’”

Overall, I would rate the book a five star read since there is some sections that the dialogue could be used in everyday lessons of learning something new.

The book says it has BDSM but the elements that it has are called sensory (or sensation) play by the way of body worshiping and bondage. Nothing that is too severe, but there is one section of nipple clamps and another of anal play.

He’s everything she didn’t know she needed...

Allison would rather fix computers than worry about sex. That is, until the newest barista in town changes everything. All it takes is one hot stare with his sinful baby blues to remind her she’s not just one of the guys. She has lusty needs only he can fulfill.

Patrick’s coffee shop is on the verge of an epic failure, until Allison takes charge of his computer system. He may not know anything about motherboards, but he does know how to take control—in and out of bed. Now Patrick is determined to get what he wants—Allison in his cuffs. His sensual mastery awakens an intense passion and under his command, he’ll unlock the geek girl’s darkest desires.

Warning: Collars. Cuffs. Clamps. Coffee.
You may never look at your local barista the same way again.

My Review
Allison is a tech savvy nerd and I loved her. She plays Halo and wears Wonder Woman t-shirts and basically just one of the guys. She took to submitting and bondage beautifully but I would have thought there would have been some hesitation. She seemed to know her life was lacking but unsure of what she needed to fix it.

Patrick went into business with his brother Alex and they opened Perfect Shot. Patrick is a charming and good looking man. You can tell he is a great person because of how he cares for the people in his life. I just thought he was a little too perfect for my tastes.

I hated the fight between Patrick and Allison. I thought he handled it like a complete ass. He didn't make an attempt to like her friends or even try to get along. He just made assumptions that they didn't care because of how they acted. The sex scenes were great and very intense. Ms. Brookes has a very vivid writing style. I liked all of the secondary characters and can't wait to hear their stories. All in all I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I wanted some more plot, even with the fight it was all a little to easy for me.

*** I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book in a First Reads***

This was such an easy book to read, not especially short but for some reason I managed to read it pretty quick and was disappointed to reach the end.
Great background with a bit of change to the norm. Allison is a geek, she loves all the things that generally speaking get most lads drooling and she has a great job that she is good at and loves, working with many aspects of pcs and electronics. This is how she comes to meet Patrick, the co-owner of the new coffee shop, when she comes to his rescue to help sort out his ancient PC/till system in the shop on his first day.
From there they both find there is an attraction between them and maybe the hint of something more.
Through dual pov we learn from both sides what they think of each other. Patrick is an experienced Dom and sees in Allison the spark of a sub lying in waiting. Allison is not sure what it is she sees and feels when she thinks of Patrick but she knows it's intense and not something she has thought much about before in her desires.
So starts an intense relationship exploring new things for both of them.
I really enjoyed it, how the background was different from the norm and made things more interesting. But the BDSM side of the story was really good. After reading stacks of similar subject matter lately it's interesting to get a different take on it. The BDSM relationship in this book is very passionate but also really emotional and sweet (for lack of better word) which made it even more steamier and hotter in some respects, it's a different take from most of the books I've read lately and it intrigued me.
I also enjoyed the small amount from the other characters sharing 'The Sanctuary' and would love to read their stories, they all seem to have so many secrets and I loved what snippets we got from them.
A great read, full of action and emotion and of course hot, steamy stuff!!

The life-blood of any real IT tech is fueled by caffeine, which is what brings Allison Stuart to the new coffee shop in town. After seeing the struggling man behind the counter, all thoughts of coffee are wiped out of her mind, replaced with desires so strong not even the best double espresso can compare.

Getting Perfect Shot off the ground is never going to happen if Patrick Conners and his brother Alex do not get a computer system that actually works. It is a good thing a goddess of technology just happens to step in and save his day.

Spending time with Patrick while working on his upgrade, has Allison fantasizing about things she has never even tried with another man. His strength and control stir a deep longing in her to submit to his will in every way, which for someone as smart and independent as she is, is rather disconcerting. Patrick has no trouble visualizing Allison in his leathers, but pushing too much too fast will only get him in trouble.

Allison may be a techy geek with a passion for comics and gaming, but that is only half of her personality. With Patrick she turns those passions in a whole new direction that drives her right over the edge into a world of kink. Patrick, who makes high marks in my book for being a genuinely great guy, is as totally enthralled with her quirky mannerisms as he is with her body. What a fantastic way to start a series!

After reading the first chapter of Hardware on Sara's blog, I was immediately hooked. I wanted to find out more about Allison and the mysterious Patrick. So I went to Liquid Silver Books and bought the Hardware ebook.

Now I’ve read many romance novels before, but Hardware is the first I’ve read involving any form of bondage and Domination/submission. I found Hardware to be the perfect introduction since the heroine, Allison is introduced to the lifestyle as well. Hardware does not involve any hardcore BDSM, and the hero Patrick only lives around the edges.

As for the plot line, Sara Brookes remains true to the romance genre and brought tears to my eyes a couple times. The characters are well-developed and easy to fall in love with. I found the ending of Hardware to be different from the contemporary romance, but the symbolism was just as meaningful.

If you have never read erotic romance before and would like to, this is the perfect book for you. If you have read erotic romance before, be sure to get yourself a copy.

Geek meets sexy Dom. And he's not your usual Dom. He doesn't like to spank or hit for any reason. This was a romantic BDSM book. It's definitely the softer side of BDSM. He does like to restrain her, but that's about as far as he goes. I really liked Patrick and his family. His mother was a blast. Alex, his brother, is in the middle of a divorce and in a lot of pain. I really want to fix him and make him happy. I'm pretty sure the author already has his HEA in mind. Elena, Patrick's Domme friend, is very interesting. I would like to read about her story! So many times we get the Dom version in BDSM I like to see a strong female Domme role. This was a sweet romantic read for me.

I'm not going to lie. I bought this because of the cover. The story was alright. A pretty geek meets a washed up athlete who now owns a coffee shop. It started out as a cute burgeoning relationship but very early on in the story and with no real intro to his backstory the guy crush's vulgar thoughts and fetishes are revealed. It was just brought on a little abruptly. Some scenes were tasty but I think the lead up of the crush story was better than the sex story in this book. Additionally, some of the scenes at the end of the book were a little odd (meeting his family for instance). This is a rental, not a purchase.

It's always a crap shoot when an author steps out of their comfort zone and writes something new and different.

With Hardware Sara Brookes steps out of her normal zone of comfort and lands safely in an entirely new one.

Compelling characters and scorching sex scenes abound but it's the underlying story of trust and acceptance that gives this book the soul not often found in contemporary erotic romances.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to step outside their own comfort zone and try something new and different. You won't be disappointed.

Upon reading the summary for Hardware, I thought this might be a tongue-in-cheek entertaining read. I was rather surprised when I feel in love with Al and the geeky girl she is. The conclusion could have used a bit more drawing out, but overall I truly enjoyed the storyline and lighthearted humor. Not too often you find a "light" top/bottom book. I wouldn't necessarily say this is BDSM but it definitely toes the line that and more vanilla individuals might get squeamish about.

Solid four star read, light (sensual or sensation play) level BDSM scenes with the exception of one clamp scene and a anal scene.
Interesting nonetheless.

They didn't rush into bed, took time, and that's what I loved about that. Patrick--fucking hot Dom, taking Allison right in the comic book store. The control yet also vulnerable side to him to confess his needs was sad yet nice. Made him human.

And I loved how Allison went from a clumsy shy geek to comfident strong woman. And I loved the fact that the geek was a woman.

Finally a book about a new sub that isn't a weak 'Woe is me' person. I like the plot line, the story read smoothly, and the story is believable. A nice change from the FSOG garbage of the weak girl falling in love with the UberMillionaire.
