It had begun as a harmless deception, a white lie to ease the last days of Trevor Barrone's grandmother. Finally, Trevor was going to grant her dying wish and marry Robyn Christopher. And now Robyn found herself exchanging wedding vows with this dazzling celebrity she barely knew. But once Mrs. Barrone died, would Robyn's recent marriage be a thing of the past? Now that Fate had cast the dashing Trevor into her arms, could circumstance drive him away? All that Robyn knew was that she felt an overpowering desire to make this stranger hers forever.
I really didn't like the romance in this one at all, but I had to give this two stars because the world building was good. It's set in a Northern California coastal town, which sounded lovely. The premise was good - heroine has lived in this town for a few years running a arts and crafts souvenir type store. She has befriended an elderly neighbor who is rightfully proud of her grandson, a best selling author who wrote about his experiences during some sort of African revolution. The heroine hates him because he hasn't visited his grandmother since becoming famous.
The H/h meet when the hero rescues her from the ocean after she tried to help untangle a seagull. They might be attracted to each other, but all they did was insult each other from their very first meeting. The hero wants to move his grandmother to his new house in Arizona and asks the heroine to help convince her. Heroine doesn't want to show she agrees with the hero so she stays away for three days.
At some point in that three days the hero left town for business meetings and Grandma was on her own. She fell, broke her hip and had a stroke. It was a least a day before heroine found her. She's in bad shape and the H/h think she will die. The hero wants her to have something to live for so he tells her they are getting married.
Grandma rallies and makes noises about attending their wedding. The end up with a church ceremony and the hero buying a large house in the area. Grandma is going to live with them in her own wing until she dies.
He tries to put the moves on the heroine on their wedding night, saying that they might as well take advantage of this marriage trap, since they don't know how long Grandma will live. Heroine is insulted by that and the prenuptial agreement the H had her sign before the wedding. So no wedding night.
The next day a hot nurse shows up to take care of Grandma (and the hero presumably). At this point the heroine decides she "loves" the hero and after of few weeks, she tries to seduce him, echoing the same words the hero used on their wedding night. Hero is insulted and turns her down. Then Grandma dies and the heroine realizes she has to leave. She does so during a storm and just barely misses having a redwood tree fall on her car.
She is gone for three weeks. When she returns to run her shop, she finds the house boarded up and the hero in the hospital. Seems he was right behind her when she fled and he got clipped by the tree. He doesn't want the heroine's pity, only her love. The heroine is just as snarky and insulting declaring her love as she was when she didn't like him. Hero seems to buy this brand of affection and decides they will stay married. HEA, I guess?
I didn't buy their relationship one bit. It took two thirds of the book to get to the fake marriage and then the H/h were hardly together and when they were they were fighting and sniping. I didn't like either character. The heroine was supposed to be a "warm loving" person, but I found her to be a passive aggressive prig who let her prejudices color everything. The hero was permanently cranky - which makes me think he wasn't getting any from the nurse, either.
I did like Grandma. She loved plants and was always rotating them in front of her sunniest window. (Just like my Grandma). She and her friends had great fun at the wedding reception (more than the bride and groom). They also gave wonderful gifts of crocheted pot holders and toilet paper covers. Those are my kind of Grannies. :)

I feel like the story could have been better and deeper. Characters were decent but not enough progressive scene and romance between the two main. In fact I really don’t see how, when or why she fell for him. Suddenly, she does and then stupidly torturing herself that he was having an affair with the nurse lady when there was a lack of ground in the first place. She was so damn persistent about that and her love for him but it was all truly in her head. There was too much internal monologue we missed out on a lot of character’s interactions and development. And honestly the grandmother was just a plot device, eventually the old lady was nonexistent in the story, just hanging out in the background as needed when required, and when she die it was glossed over. How much they had loved her, expected the end for her was near, her sudden death barely impacted the characters. Obviously, the story has to end soon so we gotta move forward quick. The amount of time the author made this self-determined heroine convinced the hero she really loved him was cringe and unnecessary. I still didn’t feel their love for each other, but there she was plainly saying it over and over, “I love you,” and the hero in equally plain words FINALLY accepted and returned with something ultimate like, “Because I love you.” Very forceful, mechanical and insincere; something only robots would say in a manual book.
The writing is a little awkward, especially the abrupt ending but it is a nice, pleasant story. No over the top drama, just two people who both care about the same person and that turns them towards each other.
I'm actually giving this a 3.5 stars. I enjoyed reading it. I like the verbal back and forth banter between the hero and heroine with their pretend marriage. I think the heroine was pretty sweet with her caring nature but you can see she had some. I liked the hero too but I don't think the book was long enough for me to really know the hero. The ending was rather abrupt though and still had them sniping at each other lol so I kind of wished the ending was longer and showed their more loving happy ending lol. Oh yeah the other man was also very nice for bringing the hero and heroine together. Hope he finds someone for himself too ☺
