The Start Hawks are unprepared for the unusual alien attack on their ship. They must fight desperately to save the mother whose son is the rightful heir to the Salukan throne. Since Operative 41 is half Salukan, he is key in handling the situation. The heir's uncle is out for revenge. His instability makes him a great danger to them all, even the children.
Commander Kelly is not the world's most cunning military strategist, but he is a determined fighter. Once again, survival is not likely. They need help from wherever they can get it, even from their sentient pet, Ouoji.
These six tales remind me of those I used to hear at summer camp. Two talented story-telling counselors would alternate in narrating an adventure. Each would end his segment with the hero in mortal danger, then relinquish the reins to the other, who would then have to figure out how to get the hero out of it. They would do their best to make survival seem impossible. Sean Dalton does that.
