Filmmaking has been described as the most technical branch of the arts in terms of the elements it takes to create a finished project. With all of the recent, lightning fast changes to digital media, the lowering in price of video and sound equipment, almost anyone can become a filmmaker. Even with all of these things on your side, it is very easy to feel more than a little overwhelmed. What Russell Evans' "Stand Up Shorts" does for the beginning filmmaker is to help them overcome some of those fears.
The book is laid out in the typical style of Focal Press in that it does not want to overwhelm the reader with a great deal of unnecessary information. Focal Press is the standard when it comes to film related titles. You get the information you need, in simple, easy to follow instruction. Technical terms are interspersed and explained so that the filmmaker gets used to the language of the industry, the various techniques that can be used in filmmaking and get comfortable in the hands-on experience that is crucial to becoming a filmmaker. It's short, sweet and succinct so you are not going to spend a lot of time wading through information you don't need in order to get started or get through any given filming situation. Evans has also not neglected the legal questions, though he doesn't spend an inordinate amount of time on it. Getting permission from a location owner or agency that oversees it can be a big obstacle and Evans does not fail to give advice on how best to handle such a situation.
Stand Out Shorts takes you through the planning stages, writing the script, casting, lighting, sound, shooting, editing, and when you are done it gives you the information on how to find websites to distribute your film, get it out there and get it noticed by creating buzz. Included are 48 hour work schedules, information on how to upload your finished movie to the web on the many film networking sites that most people don't know about beyond Facebook and Twitter. Being in the industry in a small film company, you learn fairly quickly that everyone has to fulfill multiple roles. Evans' book carries over this ideal to the general public and gives you the information and encouragement to make your film your way. If you find that you love the process, Evans also gives you plenty of guidance on getting the next project going as soon as possible and do it all over again. Whether you are making a documentary, horror, science fiction or whatever genre you have a passion for, or even if you are proposing making a full length film, the book is valuable and you will definitely want it on your shelf.
