A couple years back my daughter who was 8 at the time came to me and said "If God is good and God created everything, where did the devil come from?" A short conversation ensued in which we talked a little about freewill. A couple of days later she came back and asked "Why did God create us with freewill?". I tried to explain about the need for love to be a choice but in the end she looked at me with a puzzled look and said "I just don't get it". A couple of months later she asked my "What if it's all a lie ... you know G-O-D?" so when I saw this book was up for review at Booksneeze I requested it to see how the author dealt with some of these questions.

The book consists of answers to 180+ questions broken up into eleven categories: God, Jesus, Holy spirit, The Bible, Christianity, Prayer, The Church, Christian Seasons and Holidays, Being a Christian Here and Now, Being a Christian Forever and Ever and Big Questions. Most of the answers are about one page and in some instances could have been longer. The author gives good, easily understandable answers to many questions which would be useful for parents who don't have a lot of bible knowledge themselves. Many of the answers are good and would be useful as a starting point in in discussions with children, many give bible verses so you can look up the original stories in the bible.

My eleven year old raised her eyebrows after reading the answer to "How do I really know Jesus walked on water" I think she found the statement Yes Jesus really did followed by a retelling of the bible story with a verse completely inadequate in answering the question. Me eleven year old daughter has been concerned about how God speaks so I suggested we read the section "Can God actually speak to me?". In my opinion the author gave an excellent answer to this question but daughter raised her eyebrows after reading the answer to "How do I really know Jesus walked on water". I think she found the statement Yes Jesus really did followed by a retelling of the bible story with a verse completely inadequate in answering the question.

I had some major issues with her treatment of some topics, the biggest of these being her views on heaven and the soul which tended to make me grind my teeth when I came to them and in particular her sloppy use of the bible in relation to this. There are numerous times when she writes about our souls living in heaven with God after we die and uses John 3:16 to illustrate this. John 3:16 only talks about having eternal life. The author makes the very common mistake of reducing our hope in Christ and Jesus triumph over death to the idea that a little bit of us that is eternal will go to live in heaven where Jesus is now, when in fact the resurrection of Jesus points to the time when all creation will be made new, us included. In the bible it says that the current heaven and earth will pass away. Some of the passages in revelation which she uses to talk about heaven actually refer to the new earth and new heaven. It is in this new creation that every tear will be wiped away our hope is not in leaving the physical to inhabit some spiritual realm but in the redemption of the whole creation.

I also feel that Jesus divinity was not well explained or stressed. The only section that explicitly names Jesus as God is in the question "Who is the trinity?". In the rest of the book it is not mentioned at all and Jesus could almost be considered just a very special human.

Lastly have a think about what you might say to the question "What's the major difference between Christianity and other religions" I was surprised to see that there was no mention of the fact that in Christianity God stoops down to rescue us and completely bridges the gap as contrasted with other beliefs that centre on how we can try to make our own way to God (or perfection). Also what about the fact the Christianity is based around an event that happened in history, that there is good reasons to believe actually happened.

I can't recommend this as a resource for answering your kids questions about God, mainly because of the issues above. I believe we need to be very careful in giving a good example to our kids of how to use the bible, and we also need to show them that there are good reasons to believe that the Christian faith is true and not just a big lie.

Great little book about some of the big questions in Christianity that kids ask. Straight forward and to the point, this paperback gives a quick explanation of the question and a bible verse to look up for extra verification if needed. Each question is a single page or 2 and very easy reading. For kids of all ages and totally something they could do on their own, for example, if you wanted to assign a chapter every Tuesday and Thursday, as I do in our home. They come to be with questions and if there are none, they email me the answer to the question so I know they've read the chapter which is really more like a small paragraph. Highly recommended.

I have a 4 year old and I have a 17 month old. My 4 year old has asked me lots of Questions about Jesus/God because we do not go to church but we pray and I read to them Bible Stories. I was so delighted to get the chance to review this book, My 4 year old and I sat together while I read the book to her and she would ask me some Questions I would explain what it was saying she loves this book and she is 4 lol. She told grandma " Guess what Grandma God is not human so he watches me all the time " I about died laughing lol. When her daddy got home from work yesterday she looked at him and said daddy did you know I can write in my Bible? lol we tell her all the time she is not allowed to write in her books ...so when this came up in this book I explain to her she could highlight with a yellow marker or with ink to remember a certain thing. She still did not understand me being so little but that was a good one :). I rate this book a 5 out of 5 because it is very educational for children trying to learn about God. I would recommend this to anyone even if your not christian because you too can read it and learn a lot as well.

Passing this book around as a reference for Bible lessons with our 6-7 year old kids. I like the summaries in this book and scripture references which allow us to refer to His Word in context.

Great resource to discuss questions even before they are asked

Loved what I read of this in Kindle. I need to get a hard copy for my boys (and me)! I liked the variety of questions it answered and it included ones my 8 and 10 year old boys were interested in.

Clearly laid out with one page responses to many essential questions. Lots of references to the source text in the Bible which permits opportunities to expand the study with the curious kid.

Packaged in a very easy question-and-answer format, Kathryn Slattery covers topics such as the truth of the Bible, the reality of God, intercessory prayer and the importance of memorizing Scripture. She also covers more light-hearted topics such as Jesus’ clothing style, His last name and boring church services. The Table of Contents is very well organized into eleven categories, each containing anywhere from 10 to 30+ questions.

As a born-again Christian my concerns are found in the underlying acceptance of a broader use of the term ”Christian.” Overall the book is a good complement to your library of children’s helps for specific questions. I would not recommend adding it directly to your child’s library however. As with most books on the market today, one has to use discernment as to what to utilize and what to dismiss. Though many of her questions/answers are Biblically sound, there are a few core beliefs where she simply fails to state Biblical truth, but instead opts for the broader acceptance of beliefs (i.e. Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox, etc) whether or not they are truly Biblical.

If I Could Ask God Anything by Kathryn Slattery was a fantastic book! Easy to read and full of questions and answers that are easily understandable for any child.

It starts off with a parents guide which was fabulous. Then broken into sections of the bible, with common questions kids might want to know.

There is an explanation of the questions with bible verses to refer to, along with a reason at the end of each question as to why God did or said a particular thing.

I absolutely loved this book and not only can it benefit children with questions, but new Christians as well. Aren't new Christians like children anyways as they try to learn about their faith? I wished I would have had this book when I first started reading the bible and became a new Christian.

Slattery did such a magnificent job with If I Could Ask God Anything. I would recommend this book to anyone that has questions about God, Jesus, and the bible.

It would be great for any Church to have on hand as well.

I give it ***** (5) Stars, BK Walker. http://bkwalkerbooks.weeby.com
