Lively illustrations lead to victory in this sweet story that promotes working together to achieve success
With their eyes set on a grand prize of the biggest piece of cheese they’ve ever seen, the Five Nice Mice set out to work on building an unbeatable racecar. But before they can cross the finish line, they must elude a dog, heavy human feet, and a big, bouncing red ball. Do they have what it takes to win the competition? This uplifting tale of team spirit and achievement enchants and engages with vibrant, detailed illustrations.
Chisato Tashiro was born in Tokyo, Japan. She studied economics at Meiji Gakuin University and later the history of children’s picture books at a school in Takatanobaba. Her work has been exhibited at several shows in Japan. Chisato has illustrated the picture book Voices of the Forest for the World Expo 2005 Aichi in Japan, which introduced her to a wide international audience.
Five mice plan and build a race car, and then they hop into the vehicle and participate in a swift race to the finish line. Along the way, they face quite a few challenges, including a dog, other race cars, and human traffic. Young readers will enjoy all the action, the adorable mice with their own unique personalities, and the cheese prize for the victors. I enjoyed the fact that the race is not won in traditional fashion.
The pictures are really lovely. In palate and texture, They remind me a bit of some of my favorite old John Burningham books. It made for a very exciting read-aloud, with a satisfying ending. Best for 4 and up, I think.
