Lady Gold Investigates Volume 5 continues this fun series of short-read mysteries set in the 1920s. There are two stand-alone stories, a perfect length to enjoy in a leisurely evening with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Or maybe a cocktail, to get into the 1920s feel! I find the ‘Investigates’ series of short stories are great for train journeys or flights too.
The cases that Ginger Gold and her new assistant Magna Jones have to solve here are intriguing and entertaining as always. It’s an undemanding read, ideal for relaxing, and as always, Lee Strauss weaves real historical detail seamlessly into her stories, which I absolutely love. It makes them feel authentic, and I also always end up doing an internet search to learn more about it! (eg the extreme weather of winter 1927-8.)
I also like the way you get little bits of character development, here the relationship with Magna, who is a rather abrasive character but there are obviously hidden depths. I’m looking forward to more from her.
You definitely don’t need to have read the Ginger Gold Mystery series that this book originates from - but if you you haven’t, I’d recommend you go right on back to “Murder on the SS Rosa” and enjoy them all from the beginning. They are wonderful for any historical cosy mystery lover, and you have such a treat in store!
