The Go Ahead Boys starred in a series of six juvenile novels that were published 1916-'17. Their nickname came from the quote attributed to Davy Crockett: "I leave this rule for others when I'm dead; be always sure you're right- then go ahead." In this fifth book our friends Fred Button (Pyg), John Clemens (String), Grant Jones (Soc), and George Washington Sanders (Pop) return to the water and compete in races and have adventures and make new friends. Miss Susie is a terrific character, and definitely has her own ideas as to how a proper young lady can behave. The boating scenes are especially well portrayed. The writing style is a bit on the florid side, and the young peoples' dialog probably not too realistic, but it's a fun adventure tale told with considerable humor and enthusiasm.
I listed to the audio recording available through USF Lit2Go and I enjoyed it. Great adventure story about a group of friends competing in a boat race. I adored the girls and it had an excellent ending. It's not necessarily a MG or YA book, but I would recommend it for ages 10 and up.
