Civil War Williamsburg

Rate this book
Back in print in time for the Civil War anniversaries Includes firsthand accounts and illustrations of the most important events and sites

In May 1862 the battle of Williamsburg was fought just outside of the quiet town. Union troops now occupied the city, and throughout the rest of the war, Williamsburg residents, who had enthusiastically supported the Confederacy, were forced to endure the indignities of living under Union military government. "Civil War Williamsburg" recounts the tragic, comic, and mundane events that made up life in Williamsburg during occupation.

I normally do not read a lot of local histories, but this finely compiled and edited book is a pleasant exception. Williamsburg, Virginia is widely known for its history as Virginia's colonial capital; what is not widely known is this town's role as a "border" area during the American Civil War. Although no formal border is near Williamsburg, it was occupied by Union forces for most of the war so, practically speaking, served as the border between Union occupied Northern Virginia and the rest of Confederate controlled Virginia (to include the rebel capital of Richmond). I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the American Civil War, Virginia history, or American architectural history.

Interesting book about the Battle of Williamsburg and the effect on the quiet little town of Williamsburg. Lots of great stories of interesting and famous people. We used this book in our homeschool Rhetoric history studies.

Colonial Williamsburg is focused on the Revolutionary War, so even residents tend to overlook the town’s key role in the Civil War. Carson Hudson uses photos, landmarks, and personal accounts to tell this story of American history.
