I read this book in my second year of college. I was studying Communication Science at the time and this book was part of my Masters. It was enlightening and inspired me to study Women Studies.
Still a thoroughly relevant introduction to the study of Feminist research of media, despite being 20 years old. Van Zoonen has proven herself to be a critical force in the field of Feminist media studies. While new media technologies have truly changed the way media is produced and consumed (arguably changing in many ways gendered representations), this work should not be ignored for those interested in surveying this genre of academic work without committing to in-depth study.
Van Zoonen provides a solid and accessible introduction to the complex and fragmented field of feminist media studies that is, in many ways, still relevant to modern research practices.
