"A savvy analysis of the game's financial problems" (Los Angeles Times), now updated throughout and featuring a new chapter on recent controversies and upheavals in the game. Selected as one of the best books of the year by Business Week.
Author Andrew Zimbalist looks at the economics of Major League Baseball. With a copyright in 1992, my reading of this book is clearly dated, but that does not take away from its value. Zimbalist delves into player performance/salaries, minor leagues, and media among other things as they relate to the finances of MLB in clear and straight forward way. Much of what he covers is still relevant today. What still shines 20 plus years later is the detail Zimbalist goes into regarding baseball’s financial history, making his book well worth the read. Baseball and Billions is fair and balanced look at a side of the game that is often overlooked, disliked, and misunderstood.
Solid understanding of the underlying economics of baseball. Some conclusions are obscured by tables or speculation. In need of update to reflect modern revenues and expenses, but still relevant.
