There was an article in the New York Times the other day about Charles Wright, a black novelist whose few books deserved better than they got. This indie (self published?) item felt like a slightly more coherent version of Wright's free-associative riffs on race and rough living. I blundered across a copy in the $1 racks at The Strand, and somehow that seemed the perfect way to bump into something this quirky and fiercely independent. Rough around the edges, too, but that's part of the charm.
