Enjoyed the excerpts of primary sources at the end of each chapter. Tone was a bit haughty French academician (“... it is very complicated so I will simplify by saying”), and he likes to throw digs at other scholars in his bibliography, but I kind of enjoyed the arrogance, it seemed to suit. Wish The author had spent more time on cultural life of common people (as he did in one excellent chapter near the end) and maybe a little less on every variation of taxation and how they were applied in each region to each estate. Overall informative.
