Où était-il passé depuis l'Armistice ? Renvoyé dans ses foyers, prisonnier en Allemagne ? J'avais souvent rêvé de lui. Nu, au garde-à-vous, serrant mes traductions entre ses mains à hauteur du pubis. Mes doigts parcouraient le creux de son épaule, son sein ferme comme la joue d'un cheval, son ventre, mon index tournait, tournait au bord du trou, mon doigt dans son nombril, mon ongle limé en pointe égratignait sa peau un peu grenue, la caresse allait se perdre du côté des hanches et des fesses. Le soldat restait au garde-à-vous, ordre du capitaine, malgré sa nudité et mes caresses, un léger trouble de la lèvre seulement, malgré la défaite et l'Occupation. C'était dans mes rêves. Je pensais ne plus le revoir et il était là, à cette heure où j'attendais des Roulieres, au milieu du couloir de la Gestapo.À travers le portrait d'un personnage enseignant l'allemand pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et que l'amour pour un soldat juif vient bouleverser, le troisième roman de Gilles Rozier traverse une France sans résistance, livrée à l'Histoire et à une constellation de désirs entre héroïsme ambigu et passivité. Porté par une dramaturgie aiguë, subtile, il délimite un singulier périmètre érotique où s'aimantent à travers deux corps deux langues antagonistes aux explosives similitudes : le yiddish et l'allemand.

Gilles Rozier

Gilles Rozier was born in 1963 in La Tronche. He graduated from a top notch school of management in 1984. He started learning Yiddish in 1985 and had his Thesis Defense in Yiddish Literature with mentor Rachel Ertel. He has been acting as General Manager of Bibliothèque Medem in Paris since 1994. He is married and has two sons. Both French and Yiddish are spoken at home. He wrote a few poems in Yiddish which were published by literary magazines Di pen (Oxford), Yerusholaimer almanakh (Jerusalem) and Toplpunkt (Tel-Aviv). Gilles Rozier also writes novels in French.

Me ha sorprendido esta novela. La tengo desde hace tiempo clasificada en mi colección de novelas del holocausto, pero, en realidad, es algo distinto.

No se trata de una historia de Auschwitz ni de nazis y judíos y, sin embargo, transcurre durante la ocupación nazi de Francia. El protagonista es quien narra la historia, pero nunca se le puede identificar con claridad si es un hombre o una mujer, yo pasé de uno a otro al avanzar en la lectura, pero al final decidí que el narrador era un hombre. Su relación con Muerte en Venecia de Thomas Mann, su libro favorito, me inclinó a identificar al protagonista con un hombre, más considerando que el nombre de su esposa es ambiguo; si bien es mayormente usado por hombres, también es un nombre femenino en francés.

De algún modo refleja la pasividad de un pueblo que vive la ocupación sin rebelarse, aguantando, tratando de no ver, de no saber, es decir, tal como hoy tenemos un genocidio frente a nuestras narices y la mayoría prefiere no ver, no saber, no conocer.

El narrador bien podría ser una mujer, pero supongamos que es un hombre. Cuenta de su pasado durante la guerra. Era profesor de alemán en un instituto femenino. En medio de la ocupación alemana es llamado por el estado mayor para traducir información de la prensa nazi. Así conoce a Herman que obraba de estafeta. Una vez ocupada la ciudad por las tropas alemanas, fue llamado por la Gestapo, ahora la función era similar, pero para los enemigos. Traducción e interpretación. Esta vez no había mensajero, él debía acudir a retirar los documentos, traducirlos y regresarlos.

Así volvió a ver a Herman, en el cuartel de la Gestapo conducido entre un montón de otros judíos. Lo ayuda a escapar y lo esconde en el sótano de su casa. En un momento está en el cuartel, al siguiente está en la casa; se cuenta el qué, el cómo no es más que un par de líneas por aquí y por allá porque todo lo que ocurre en esta novela se cuenta a cuentagotas. Lo que importa no es tanto lo que ocurre en la guerra, sino en los recuerdos del narrador que se enfocan en su interior, no su exterior. En la descripción de su familia, de su hermana, de su madre, de su relación con Herman.

Es una novela corta y fácil de leer, pero no hay que esperar de ella una "historia del holocausto". Es una historia sobre los seres humanos y sus pulsiones. Es también sobre el amor.

A tutor in occupied France, it is the conjugation of verbs rather than the mystery of conjugal relations that comes naturally. Marriage is a duty. Language is a passion. But not, even remotely, the living language of love. That exists only in the literature devoured in the cellar; the forbidden volumes of Heine, Mann and Rilke.

It is embarrassing to see how sparsely reviewed books of transcendent power and beauty like this one are. Gilles Rozier (for goodness sake Goodreads can't even get his name right!) has written a short novel that says more in its 180 pages (including appendix) that any collection of New York Times best sellers in the last twenty years and has attracted some of the most mind numbingly stupid English language reviews I have ever read.

This is both a novel of love and a passionate laceration by the narrator of her failure, and ultimately everyone, to live up to the challenge of evil when it came and squatted on her doorstep and shit all over her, her family, her home, house, town, country, the world. This is a lament for being powerless and the guilt you cannot escape for being powerless. What good are words, no matter how beautiful, when they are hidden in a cellar? What truth or beauty is there in love when it is hidden in a cellar?

This is a stunning novel of love, but of so much else but most importantly it is a novel about France, and all our failures, to stand up to evil. The ghost that haunts this book and my memory is the man the narrator tried and failed to save but the woman she never even thought to save and is with her, unexorcised, until she joins her in the anonymity of a crematorium's flames.

Interesting, with some beautiful prose. Glad I read Death in Venice last year as there are plenty of mentions and there is a definite ‘Mann’ style about it which works well given the story. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was from Herman’s perspective and the masculine prose would’ve worked better too.

it's a real talent to write a book without leaving a trace for the main character's gender, especially in french!also,a book for the world war 2 from the eyes of an ordinary man (i claim it's a man)

Tijdens het lezen van Land zonder liefde schreef ik:
“ Het heeft even geduurd maar nu lees ik over een oude, bijna vergeten, wereld in Oost Europa, over rituelen, verschillende generaties en verhalen door overlevering in een tijd die er lang geleden was.
Soms vind ik de vertelwijze wat 'stijfjes' maar de verslagen over de verschrikkingen van pogroms in de Middeleeuwen in vroeger Oekraïne en later en ook de terloopse verwijzingen naar het lot van slachtoffers van de Wereldoorlogen zijn erg indrukwekkend. Soms sla ik het boek dicht omdat de beschrijvingen zo bruut zijn.
De veelal laconieke reacties van generaties na de Tweede Wereldoorlog op de geschiedenis van overlevenden maken veel indruk.
Het is interessant dat schrijver Gilles Rozier aan de hand van een reconstructie van het leven van drie Joodse dichters in staat is zo'n aangrijpend levensbeeld te schetsen die de geschiedenis van de Joodse gemeenschap in enkele eeuwen omspant”
Ik vond Land zonder liefde een indrukwekkend, goed gedocumenteerd en zorgvuldig geschreven boek.

Изключително проста история разказана по впечатляващо.
Съвършенството на езиковата игра само подсилва съвременния "постен" литературен език - литературната реалност е оставена недоизказана и самоподразбираща се. Всички въпроси, които изникват в съзнанието на читателя се п��явяват не поради слабостта на текста, а поради изчерпателността, с която всичко е изговорено неутрално, нулево, политкоректно.
Твърде рядко срещам книги, в които лингвистичният повдиг към изящество на играта е превърнат в литературна реалност. И на всичкото отгоре четенето не тежи - книгата се приема на един дъх, без да оставя послевкус след себе си - само приятното усещане за еститеческо удоволствие, което е наситило сетивата.

jedno od boljih štiva koje sam imala u ruci. pomalo podsjeća na "kradljivicu knjiga". no, ta me se u konačnici ipak nije toliko dojmila.

nudim citat : " po izlasku, s plaćom u džepu prijeđem ulicu i ulazim u najbolju knjižaru u gradu. pretvaram novac u književnost. čarobno"

fantastičan glavni lik. toliko ljudski, realan !

žao i je što nisam u mogućnosti pročtati original na francuskom. zašto? voljela bih znati je li prijevod vlatke valentić uistinu tako briljantan kako mi se čini.

When I started reading the story itgave me a soso feeling but I didn't know if it was because of the story or because I hadn't read for a long time in my mother tongue, Dutch.
There is not much to say about the story, actually I am not sure what I can say about it.
Even though it was short, it didn't read fast. Didn't interested me much.

Não o procurava. Encontrei-o por acaso e com alguma surpresa por o ver ali. Comprei-o, trouxe-o para casa e arranjei-lhe um lugar na estante.

Uns dias depois peguei-lhe com um olhar mais atento e não mais o larguei.

Há livros assim, que se nos colam à pele, que nos emocionam e passam a fazer parte de nós.

A simply told tale of one woman's life during a short period of France's history - the occupation. It is told in a natural voice and isn't over-hyped. These are her own personal emotions amid a background of international war.
