This book isn't really a "book," per se, so much as a guide (hence the title). It has some good suggestions, but, having checked it out from the library, I couldn't really take advantage of it. This would be a good book to keep handy near the phonebook or wherever you keep your going-out-to-dinner ideas. Yelp.com seems to be a little handier, unfortunately. Ultimately, a good way to briefly familiarize yourself with the city, but not the end-all-be-all of suggestion books. Also, it's not searchable.
Just purchased this. Moving to LA in May and although I'm from SoCal I haven't lived there since 2003 so I wanted to reacquaint myself a little. As the title says-this is a book for newcomers and residents, not visitors but is helpful. I would suggest buying it in tandem with "A Newcomers Guide to Los Angeles"-the newest edition.
Fun just reading it. Even better using it as a resource to find interesting little-known museums and sites of the city. My favorite was the Jurassic Technology Museum. First time I'd heard of it.
