Very much what I was looking for, a first hand description of the Southern way of life. Though not all-encompassing, this book paints a colorful picture with many facets, as viewed by a devout Christian gentleman.
There were a good many remarks that would in today's America be decried as racist, but was merely the language of the day. Some things herein said may be considered demeaning, or condescending, but when you pair it with the passion and fervor for the spiritual and physical welfare of the slaves, you cannot help but see the affectionate concern for these people by their former masters.

This book also contained an excerpt from an excellent, Biblical defense of slavery (by one James H. Thornwell, I believe, adopted by the Southern Presbyterian Church) that I would like to find in it's entirety.

"Some would say, 'Why write of a dead issue?' To this we make answer: Truth never dies, for it has the years of God, the immortality of it's Author. What was scriptural and therefore right before the war, is both still. God has in His providence abolished African slavery, because He saw fit, and because His Sord always taught, as the southerner believed, that,...'to be free is better.'" ~ R.Q.Mallard

This is the author's recollections about plantation life in the South before emancipation. Unfortunately, most of the essay deals with Presbyterian preachers and their religious views. Very little about every day life of either blacks or whites. I also feel that the author protrayed aa condesindering attittude toward blacks. I read the book as I have a major interest in American history.

🖊️This book was a grand discovery, and the information therein was good, although not fully encompassing on the Southern way of life. However, it still is a very good resource and definitely fascinating.
