This is an entertaining, short transitional story for those children who have grown beyond beginning readers, but can't quite tackle a middle grade novel yet. Flatfoot Fox has a partner, Secretary Bird, who wants to solve the mystery of the missing items on his own. I loved how the Secretary Bird had a bottle of ink tied to his leg (not mentioned in the text, only depicted in Brian Lies's marvelous illustrations); and when Secretary takes over the case, he wears the Fox's necktie, while Fox ties the ink bottle to his foreleg. Humorous and perfect for second and third grade readers.

My kids and I recently found the Flatfoot Fox series and, especially my 7 year old, love them! This one is entertaining with its tongue twister phrases that include a string of words that all start with the same letter. The smartest detective in the whole world is helping Bashful Beaver retrieve his lost big black bag of beautiful bright blue buttons, along with his friends’ items that go missing - mean-tempered turtle, scatterbrained squirrel, rinse-away raccoon, etc.
