👀 Wanna sneak peek?

Danny

For a moment, Danny was sure his eyes were playing tricks on him, rationalizing that seeing that woman in the Atlanta airport must have brought her to the forefront of his mind.

But he wasn’t seeing things. The woman before him was< Gwen.

She’d changed a lot since the last time he’d seen her, but there was no mistaking those eyes. Big. Beguiling. Pulling on some invisible string in his gut, rousing his protective instincts.

Just like they had all those years ago.

The others at the table offered polite greetings and nice to meet yous as Matt Winston did the intros. Danny responded with acknowledging nods. Gwen looked as if she was trying to reconcile the name with the man now standing before her.

Granted, he’d changed a lot, too. He wasn’t the scrawny, skinny kid with the long, shaggy hair, leather wrist cuffs, and perpetual cancer stick hanging out of his mouth. But still, she should remember.

“Gwen was stuck in Atlanta too,” Hayley said, cutting into his sudden trip down memory lane.

“Small world,” he said, recovering slightly. “I don’t recall seeing you on the flight.”

“Oh, she didn’t fly. She drove,” Hayley said with a hint of disapproval.

“From Atlanta? Through that storm?” he asked in disbelief.

“More like its aftermath,” Gwen corrected, shifting uncomfortably, “though I did hit some ice around DC.”

She lowered her gaze in a manner he remembered well. Gwen didn’t like being in the spotlight. She never had. She preferred the safety of the shadows.

She peered at him from beneath thick lashes and a curtain of silky-looking auburn hair, the unspoken question hovering silently between slightly parted pink lips. Is it really you?

He peered back. Yes, it’s really me.

The moment stretched into a tense awkwardness until someone cleared their throat.

Hayley stood and gathered her plate and silverware. “Right. Well, it looks like the guys have things to discuss. We’ll leave you to it.”

The other women stood and followed suit, including Gwen. Several of them kissed their men and murmured see you laters. Gwen shuttered her gaze and walked away without looking back.

Danny watched them go, his mind whirling with questions behind an impassive mask. The most prevalent: What is Gwen doing here?

'Never discount good woo-woo'

And Blessing works her magic once again here, Danny is a little lost but Blessing's cryptic comments send him exactly where he needs to be and give us another fantastic book in this series and a great crossover with the Sanctuary series.
Danny wouldn't say his life has been sprinkled with the luck of the Irish, but fate sending Gwen his way for the third time in his life is definitely lucky. The first time he knows he was there to protect her, but this time he knows it is finally their time and he is determined to win her heart and make her his.....if only he knew he has had her heart for 15 years!
Danny finds himself on a journey of self discovery but finally getting some answers about his roots also allows him to lay the past to rest - he just didn't expect the answers to be as big as they are!
Great series, fantastic book.

‘Too Close to Home’ by Abbie Zanders is part of a multi-author series ‘The Long Road Home’ that follows several military men who are trying determine what comes after their service is over. For Gwen and Danny, the road is heartbreaking and they both struggle to overcome their personal challenges and fears. Gwen and Danny first met as children many years ago while both were in foster care. They reconnect at Sanctuary – she is the new Psychotherapist and he is just passing through. Danny is a SEAL who has recently separated from the Navy and is looking for the family he never knew. Gwen is trying to get a fresh start after a horrific event. Due to their backgrounds, neither trusts easily and that makes their paths even more challenging.
The story is like a family reunion of many of the wonderful characters from this author. We have all the Sanctuary crew plus the Callaghan family and a few others in the vicinity. None of them know what to make of Danny and he is perhaps a darker hero than usual for Zanders, but ultimately he is a protector and will accomplish his mission at any cost. The details about what both Danny and Gwen went through as children are very sad but are key to the people they become as adults.
Danny is secretive with the Sanctuary team, but they see beyond that and go out of their way to bring him onto the team. They also help him in his quest to find his family. Gwen is living in fear and ready to run if any hint of her past comes for her, but she refuses to trust anyone with her struggles. Gwen and Danny dance around each other – neither having much experience with relationships. Just as they seem to be making progress, Gwen’s past comes after her.
Luckily Danny quickly realizes that something is wrong and between the team of former military at Sanctuary and Danny’s newly discovered family, they quickly determine what happened and draw on their vast resources to execute a rescue plan. The story moved quickly and was engaging. The climax was exciting and a little nerve-wracking.
I am a huge fan of Abbie Zanders’ books and this story left me wanting to read more in this series and excited to see where she might go next since the Sanctuary series is complete. I got this book as ARC in exchange for an honest review. I strongly recommend this book or really anything by this author.

For those that are fans of the Sanctuary and Callaghan series of books, then you will absolutely enjoy this book! Sometimes the truth hits too close to home. Danny Donovan might look like a charming, harmless rogue, and to many, that’s exactly what he is. But buried deep beneath a mischievous smile and twinkling eyes is a man with a dark past … and a mysterious, hidden agenda. Now that he’s out of the service, it’s time to begin the next phase of his plan. And to do that, he must travel to Northeastern Pennsylvania. He’s not going to let anything get in his way. That includes Gwen Maguire, the soft-spoken female therapist who sees a lot more than she should... and who might have even more to hide than he does.

I always love a new book by this author, and then you throw in the tie-in to 2 series of hers that I love? I am completely in! I was iffy about Danny at first because I thought he would end up somehow being a bad guy, or at least bad intentions. I am so glad that I was wrong that not only is he a stand up guy, but he is also just a person who has struggles like everyone else. Gwen has been through a lot and is still trying to move past it. I love how she may be soft spoken, but she still has a spine of steel and the willingness to help others. She has this capacity for caring for others that I wasn't expecting, but I absolutely loved about her. The history between these two just made me like them even more, especially when you realize what Danny did. The suspense and help of not only the Callaghan's but Sanctuary? Absolutely loved it!! I wasn't expecting what happened to happen, but the way they all still come together to help-as always, it makes me want more! I am hoping that by us seeing a certain dog handler, that it means we may get another Sanctuary novel about him! I really liked his character in this one, so I am hopeful!

If you're an Abbie Zanders fan I am sure you'll be as delighted as I was to have the chance to catch up with the Callaghans and the denizens of Sanctuary while reading Too Close to Home. The tie-ins made an outstanding story even better.

For Danny Donovan cynical is his default. He learned early on in life; trust nothing and no one other than himself. He did eventually learn that his SEAL teammates were trustworthy and had his back but once he left the Teams it was back to business as usual. He's a man on a quest or a fool's errand depending on the day. Gwen Maguire is looking to start over and move on in her life. Not something that will be easily accomplished given her recent history but joining the Sanctuary team is a step in the right direction. Having Danny show up at Sanctuary about the same time as she does, has to mean something, right? The two have a history, a fifteen year old one but nonetheless a powerful one. Admitting they remember one another takes a bit of time but they rebuild their connection slowly. She crushed on the dark haired teen rebel back then and still carries those feelings today. If she only knew the lengths he went to back in the day to keep her safe. Those protective instincts are still present and when it becomes apparent that Gwen is in danger, Danny calls on the Sanctuary team along with the Callaghans to help remove her from harm's way and bring her safely home. Home to Sanctuary.

I have enjoyed the stories in the Long Road Home series and this one did not disappoint. Though I have to confess that not having read the author’s series The Sanctuary nor The Callaghans, I was at a disadvantage since characters of these two series have important parts in the story and to a point, the main plot dealt with them.
That said, the story of Danny Donovan and Gwen Maguire was touching . These two met in foster care. She was the shy younger girl who followed him around, and Danny was the one always challenging authority and getting into trouble.
Fast forward twenty years and he has recently left the Navy and his SEAL teammates with the intent of finding the family he only had heard about. Thanks to Blessings whom we have met in other stories of this current series, he goes to The Sanctuary hoping to stay there till the holidays.
Meanwhile, Gwen is now a psychotherapist whose past is heartbreaking. Thanks to her friend Hayley, she has just start to work in The Sanctuary, a place for veterans to get assistance as they reintegrate to civilian life.
Imagine their surprise when Gwen and Danny meet again and it seems their attraction back in the day was not one sided. But what happens when Gwen’s past comes back into her life?
Will Danny be able to safe Gwen? Will Danny find the family he has been searching ? Will Gwen and Danny find their HEA?
I was entrusted a copy of this book . The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Abbie delivers a powerful read that really hits you in the heart. That opening chapter? I was hooked. She has a way of writing that captures the imagination and the possibilities are endless.

Our leads, Danny and Gwen’s story is heartbreaking. Both having lived in the foster system, and not in the good way. The horrors they faced at such a young age would break most, but these two are survivors, both chose different paths, but neither forgot the other. These two were destined to meet again.

Years later, Danny, a former Seal, is no longer in the military. He’s now on a different path, finding out where he belongs and who he belongs too.

Gwen also is a new path, after suffering a horrific attack that nearly took her life she’s about to start a new adventure.

The place called the Sanctuary. Where former military come to heal and learn to adjust to civilian life after having spent years serving their country.

It’s here the two meet up again. And where our story brings them full circle.

The story was beautifully written, and it ticked every box. From secondary characters to a love story that was set in stone.

Abbie truly is a gifted writer.

It’s a yes from me.

I would have given Close to Home ten stars if I could have. It checked all of my book boxes. It is an awesome sexy, suspenseful, second chance romance. Abbie Zander’s contribution to this season of the Long Road Home series is the perfect addition, and it also tied into her Callaghan and Sanctuary series. It was wonderful to revisit those characters. Gwen and Danny knew each other as children. What are the odds that they would run into each other at the Atlanta airport and then at Sanctuary? Danny shows up because Blessing from the Atlanta USO recommended it, and it was close to where he is looking for his long lost family. Gwen is the new psychotherapist at Sanctuary. They rekindle a friendship that leads to a sweet love story while finding their place in life. There is also a really big dog named Zeus that finds his people. Danny and the men from Sanctuary are there for Gwen when her past comes back to endanger her. The Callaghans are there to help plan her rescue. I could not put this book down. I was sad when I had to stop reading to go to work. I can’t wait for more stories about the Callaghans (fingers crossed)!

Gwen Maguire has had a rough life first as a foster child and then after being attacked by a crazy person. Now she is hoping to find solace, friendship (Hayley) and an enjoyable job at the Sanctuary as their new therapist. Danny Donavan joined the military at 18 anything to escape the foster system. He is hoping to follow a thread, a very bare thread to possible family in PA now that he is out of the Navy Seals. What he ends up finding is military-type camaraderie, possible family and a blast from the past. Can Gwen and Danny find friendship and maybe more? Is Danny’s instinct when it comes to Gwen able to help her now as it did in the past?
I loved this cross-over series of The Sanctuary, The Callaghan Brothers and Long Road Home series. It was fun to revisit even briefly old friends. Gwen and Danny are so different, yet so much alike. You are rooting for them from page one. Thankfully Blessing has wound her magic with a few comments and recommendations. Wonderful addition to the series!

A visit to Sanctuary is in the air. Danny Donovan just having left the Seals arrives at the Atlanta USO and meets Blessing and is told to say hello to Matt. Danny wonders about this comment and then once weather clears he’s on his way to Sanctuary just as he sees someone he knew in his early years. Gwen is also on her quest to a new life at Sanctuary however she chooses to not wait for weather in Atlanta to clear and drives to Pennsylvania. Danny’s quest to find family gives are friends at Sanctuary to question why he’s there. Gwen however arrives and is there for a new job. Both have histories that bring back some painful memories. Along the Abbie brings back many of our friends from Pine Ridge to not only try to find out more about Danny but to help out when an old menacing individual comes back into Gwen’s life. Of course as in all the Long Road Home series we will get our happily ever-after. Enjoy this one even has a wonderful dog who bonds with Danny and Gwen. Don’t miss out on a truly great story.

Danny Donavan was a typical Irish wide-boy while in the foster system. The military might have settled him down a bit, but he’s still a rogue. A civilian again he’s on a quest to find out if the stories of family he heard when young are true.
Gwen Maguire survived the foster system. A quiet nerd she worked hard and made something of herself. She’s looking forward to her job at Sanctuary; it’s a new start away from an event that still haunts her. She’s hoping for a place she will finally fit in, but not holding her breath.
I loved how the author wove the bits from Danny and Gwen’s past into the story, to give you a feel for their connection. If they both can reconcile their feelings then they will get their HEA, as long as the ghost from Gwen’s past can be put to rest.
If you love the Long Road Home collections and Abbie’s Sanctuary and Callaghan books then this is definitely not one to miss.

This is a great crossover story in which we get to catch up with characters from both the Sanctuary and Callaghan Brothers series as well as meet a couple of new characters. Danny has recently left the SEALs and he's headed to Northeast Pennsylvania to get some long-awaited answers. But when he turns up at Sanctuary unannounced, his appearance causes a stir due to his striking resemblance to a family the guys at Sanctuary know. Gwen is a psychotherapist and has come to Sanctuary to start a new job.

As the story progresses, we learn that both Danny and Gwen have secrets, including that they both knew each other in the past. But Gwen has a secret that is very dangerous, and she gets into a situation that could cost her her life. But Danny will not stop until he finds her. This story had me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next and had me holding my breath in a couple parts. I loved the surprising twists and the HEA.

I think this might be my new Annie Sanders favorite

I loved this book. Kind of a second chance romance with a stalker thrown in for good measure. Danny and Gwen were in the same foster home growing up. Danny was a bad boy type who was always getting in trouble and never respected authority. Gwen had the biggest crush on him but he never gave her the time of day. She was always hiding somewhere with her nose in a book. Danny joined the Navy and became a SEAL while Gwen went to college to become a psychotherapist. When they both end up at Sanctuary at the same time, Gwen's feelings for him come back in full swing. Will Danny even acknowledge that he knows her? Will she tell him how she feels or will she keep it to herself? How does her stalker find her and get her away from Sanctuary? Will anyone realize that something is wrong and care enough to try to find her?

Too Close to Home🏡

Too Close to Home is the next book in the Long Road Home series. This is also book four of season 3 and I must say I’m really enjoying all these stories❣️This book is a crossover of the Sanctuary series and the Callaghans. I still have to read the Callaghan series which I’m excited about after this brief glimpse into their lives.

Danny is stuck at the airport after a snowstorm and ventures to the USO, where he meets Blessing…with all her woo woo stuff and a group of military men. Blessing mentions the Sanctuary to him and he decides to make his way there. By chance Gwen, glimpses eyes on a man she hasn’t seen in more than a decade. What are the chances they belong to Danny? When she arrives at the Sanctuary, lo and behold who should be there as well? You guessed it🙃

Again, I really enjoyed this story and had a couple of surprises in it which definitely made it a little more suspenseful❤️‍🩹

There is so much to love about this book and it starts from the very first chapter when you get a glimpse of whom Danny really…
You just got to love Blessing and her ability to set Danny on his path!
The back story for Danny and Gwen is both devastating but also
uplifting as you learn about how they each survived … you see that Danny truly is Gwen’s protecter.
As the story evolves I loved reading the snippets from the Sanctuary and the Callaghans … like coming home to good friends!
it’s Danny trying to finding his truth and history …it’s the delving into the secrets and finding second chances of living a life you deserve, whist dealing with the suspense of a past that catches up to Gwen and the lengths that Danny will go to…
It’s also filled with humour, learning to be strong to have faith and ultimately finding yourself.
Thank you Abbie this is a true review of an ARC I received.

I love this book! It is part of the Long Road Home series. This story is about Danny Donovan and Gwen Maguire. They knew each other a long time ago, and are shocked to be crossing paths again. He arrives at Sanctuary, looking for a place to stay for the holidays. He has an agenda no one knows about. Gwen is at Sanctuary as the new psychologist. I love how Abbie has brought all of the Sanctuary crew and the Callaghans together. It was like visiting old friends. Danny and Gwen each have scars from the past. With everyone working together, they are willing to do anything to put an end to the danger lurking in the shadows. Danny and Gwen have to jump over some hurdles to get the HEA they deserve. Get this book ASAP and find out if they succeed. Sorry, no spoilers. I received this ARC and here is my honest review.

It's been a long time since I set white-knuckled waiting for the outcome of a story, but this one brings me back to the start of my love for Abbie Zanders and my love for her writing. With this book, we get to meet Danny Donovan who wins a place in my heart only rivaled by Jake and Shane. I love the Callaghan Family and all those who are part of that clan but it was those two that won my devotion. If you know the Callaghan's, you know just how bad-ass those around them can be, and Danny is no exception. That's the excitement level she took me to with this one.

This book is part of "The Long Road Home Series" and also brings you back to "Sanctuary" and is a wonderful crossover! We got to touch base with so many of the great characters from all three groups and I loved it! This one blew me away! I look forward to owning a hard copy for my library.

Finding a family that you thought you'd never have, finding out that family has been Seal's also, and most important finding your croie, that's what Danny found at Sanctuary, with a little woo woo from Blessing's mysterious words, seeing a ghost from the past but unsure if it's true, Gwen arrived at Sanctuary driving from Atlanta in a freak storm, unprepared for the ghost from the past, being in the foster care system they both have issues to overcome and have done so in spades, can they build on the friendship from years ago, the sexual chemistry is there, baby steps, getting to see the Callaghan clan again from Pine Ridge and finding Danny is related to them is incentive to stick around and build a lifetime of love, ohhhhh Abbie Zanders you have gone way beyond with Danny and Gwen, I have voluntarily read and review this ARC, thank you for the privilege, Dana Zamora

I was already excited to dive into this story knowing the Sanctuary and the Callahan crew were going to be in it. And I was not disappointed. I loved reading the reconnecting of Gwen and Danny and how their relationship grew slowly. Both have had a lot of trauma and not so easy to let their walls down and trust enough to let others in. The meant to be piece, the destiny, made it even more special for me. The whole Sanctuary crew, guys and wives, were so much fun to catch up with. Touching base with the Callahans was also fun to see. And how can you not fall in love with the best part of this story, Zeus. When everyone came together to save, now one of their own, I couldn't put the book down until I found out how it all turned out and where it left Gwen and Danny. I cannot wait for the next story involving anyone from this group or who will join these crews next!

This book had me at Zeus. I was intrigued already, but by the time Danny spoke to Zeus like he was Gwen’s personal body guard, I was sucked in. Then you throw in the Callaghan’s?? SOLD! Gwen’s looking for a change, Danny’s looking for answers, they both find each other at Sanctuary. The only thing that had me scratching my head a little (spoiler alert) towards the beginning, Danny is upset looking for possible long lost family because they abandoned him to crappy parents. Only to find out that the familial connection was like 2 generations ago. Danny’s feeling would have made a little more sense with a closer family connection, but I do understand that the current Callaghan family would never do that if they’d known about him. I do hope this leads to future Ghost Ops stories. 5 stars

Phenomenal book. Abbie has blended all of my favourites into this book, the sanctuary, the Callaghan’s and the Connelly’s and for some extra special spice, she’s also mixed it with the Long Road Home series. Blessing as usual add’s her wonderful woo woo…ness. The book centres around Danny and Gwen. At first I wasn’t sure about Danny. Initially he came across as a total chancer but appearances are deceiving. I absolutely loved him before the end of the book. Gwen is hiding something and oh boy what a doozy of a secret. This book is action packed, it’s exciting and there’s mystery too. I loved everything about it. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received this book from the author. I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.

I love The Long Way Home Series (5 authors are involved in each group of 5 books). It helps that I love the authors making up this creative team. For Too Close to Home, some familiar characters appear from several of Abbie Zanders other series. Note: this is a standalone book but I do love the depth of story various members add. Danny is on a quest and Gwen has a new job. They both share a past and now their present stories merge. Strong men and stronger women, coming together and supporting each other. Bravo. (Warning: this is one of my authors who hooks me into the story and I keep turning the pages to the wee hours of the morning).

Another fabulous story in the long road home series. Danny meets up with the wonderfully wacky Blessing in n the USO of Atlanta airport when his plane gets delayed en route to Northeastern Pennsylvania. When she learns where he’s headed she suggests he calls in on Sanctuary in Sumneyville. He has no specific place to be so turns up on spec. Much to his surprise their new psychotherapist turns out to be Gwen who he’d shared a dreadful foster home with. He’d been attracted to her then and nothing has changed. Both of them are hiding big secrets, some of which are more dangerous than others.
It was lovely to meet up with the Sanctuary gang again and of course the gorgeous Callaghans . I have a feeling we may meet Danny and Gwen again in the future, I certainly hope so!

Oh I absolutely loved this new addition to the Long Road Home Series! Starting at the Atlanta Airport Danny meets Blessing at the USO. Danny is on his way to the NE when Blessing reminds him to keep an open mind. She guides him to visit The Sanctuary.

Gwen is a Dr of psychotherapy and is heading to a new position at The Sanctuary. Both Gwen and Danny have a history together from when they were teens at a foster home.

I found this a fantastic story. Both Gwen and Danny are hiding secrets and have issues from the time they were in foster care. They are both finding ways to heal and trust as they get to know each other as adults. I loved seeing the guys from the Sanctuary as well as the Callaghan brothers again and their families! What a great reunion.
I highly recommend this book!

When Abbey Zanders combines the Long Road Home with Sanctuary and the Callaghans you are winning before the book is even open. Danny and Gwen’s story is both touching and uplifting with a satisfying dose of suspense. I was unsure about former Seal Danny initially, a loveable rogue or chancer out for no. #1? By the end I’m Team Danny all the way. Indelibly shaped by their painful pasts Danny and Gwen originally met in foster care, shy Gwen used to follow bad boy Danny in the hopes he’d notice her. Years later and fate or even Blessing’s woowoo reunites them at Sanctuary where Danny is on a very personal mission and Gwen is seeking a fresh start. It soon appears that Gwen’s attraction wasn’t one sided at all but as a danger from the past resurfaces Danny is going to need the help of both the Sanctuary Team and the Callaghans to ensure their HEA. It’s a great story and I highly recommend it.

Danny Donovan and Gwen Maguire knew each other as kids but get to reconnect as adults. As they get to know each other again they find that things aren’t always what they seemed. I loved how they characters evolved throughout the book and how we got to see things from both sides. I was also very happy to see some of my favorite Abbie Zanders characters make an appearance in this book. It feels like coming home when I get to see the characters that made me fall in love with Abbie’s series. This is the second book I’ve read from this series but it won’t be the last and I need to go back and read the previous ones! I’m loving seeing how each author ties things together while showcasing the characters of their own.

Too Close to Home is an emotional read.
Danny has just left the Seals and is on a private mission of his own. When he has a stop at the Atlanta Airport, he meets Blessing whom tells him he should go to the Sanctuary and to say hello to Matt.
Gwen is a new hire at Sanctuary, looking to start a new life.
Danny & Gwen meet, revealing they knew each other when they were teenagers. Both of them having tragic pasts. They become friends, with the help of a big hulking, sweet dog.
The truth to what Danny is looking for comes out, and we get to visit with some of Abbie's other amazing characters.
When some danger from Gwen's past resurfaces, Danny and the Sanctuary team will stop at nothing to help her.
This was a very enjoyable read!

Exemplary Sanctuary Romance!!

Each trip to Sanctuary is wonderful. Military travelers run into Blessing with her fae sense in the Atlanta airport, guiding them with her special knowledge. Danny and Gwen knew each other from early and dangerous foster homes. Gwen is now a psychiatrist coming to work for Sanctuary, and Danny is looking for lost family connections and to be close to Gwen. Zeus has a special role, but you must read to find out about him.

Emotional, healing, chosen family, and so many feelings to be found in this story. When danger rears its ugly head the strength of the team becomes apparent as all jump to save lives. I’d consider this a “slow burn”, but once those sparks fly, watch out!

Second chance meeting when it's meant to be

Danny and Gwen love story started at a young age even if they didn't know it. Life gives you twist and turns and sometimes you have no idea why.

The universe has a lot to do with it you just have to be open to it to except it just like Danny and Gwen found out.

Gwen and Danny both had their challenges and they were able to o second them and find their way back to each other like two star crossed lover's.

This was a book I was unable to put down, these group of ladies do a fantastic job of keeping the whole group together and adding more to each story.

Thank You Annie Sanders you have done it again a fantastic story that brought me right in.
