It’s autumn in Grand River, and as Keisha and her pals prepare for Halloween, a phone call comes in to Carters’ Urban Rescue: a deer has been spotted in the neighborhood . . . with a pumpkin on his head! The deer was enjoying the birdseed treat inside when, somehow, it got stuck. The Animal Rescue Team has a problem to solve: how do you get a pumpkin off a deer’s head when you can’t catch him? (And how can Keisha concentrate when the newest animal at Carters’ Urban Rescue is howling his way into her heart?)
Whatever the dilemma, if it’s got fur or feathers, the Carters are the ones to call! Filled with adventure, lots of laughs, and plenty of critters, Sue Stauffacher’s Animal Rescue Team books are perfect for independent readers.

I enjoy this new series. In this book, Keisha and her family try to help a deer who has a pumpkin stuck on his head. This plot is based on a real event that the author read about, as are many of her other stories in the Animal Rescue team series. Keisha also wants a dog of her own, but her mother is against indoor pets, given that they care for so many rescued wildlife. The end of the book has facts about deer and an author's note. Looking forward to reading Showtime when it releases in February 2011.
This series means well and does provide a basic approach to Humane Education. However, I would present this book with caution. Some of the information about how to free the deer and the coyote puppy might need to be explained to children so they don't try to copy the procedures.
Keisha and her family form an animal rescue team. And they have a new problem. a deer in the neighborhood has a plastic pumpkin stuck on his head. Cute read for third/fourth graders.
