Kids go crazy for Maisy’s lift-the-flap books! One of Lucy Cousins’s very first Maisy books is now reissued by Candlewick in a bold new design. (Ages 3-5)
At the swimming pool, Maisy takes off her blue hat and scarf, her red coat, her gray cardigan, her green pants, her brown boots, her purple T-shirt, and her yellow socks. Whew! Now she can put on her multicolored swimsuit and go for a swim. Faucets turn, doors open, and clothes go up and down in this hands-on story about a favorite childhood pastime.
Lucy Cousins, BA Honours in Graphic Design from The Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Brighton Polytechnic, postgraduate degree from Royal College of Art, is an author-illustrator of children's books. She is best known for her books featuring Maisy Mouse but she has also published other children's books including one about Noah's Ark. She is a mother of four and lives in Hampshire, England. Her own children are the inspiration for her books whose age range is 2-8.
First sentence: Maisy is getting ready to go swimming at the pool. Take off her blue hat and scarf. Take off Maisy's brown boots. Open Maisy's red coat. Open Maisy's gray sweater. Pull down her green pants.
Premise/plot: Maisy wants to go swimming. (I hope it's an indoor pool! Since Maisy seems to be dressed for WINTER.) She needs YOUR help to get undressed and into the pool.
My thoughts: I don't personally know why Maisy appeals to young readers. But. I know that she does. Maisy interactive books can see a lot of use! There's just something fun about "helping" Maisy do things. Whether it's helping her brush her teeth or flush the toilet OR in the case of Maisy Goes Swimming, getting her completely undressed and then putting her swimming suit on her. Still, I can't help but think it's a little weird that an author is actively encouraging me to pull someone's pants and underwear down!
The illustrations in the book were vibrant and I thought it was nice to have every piece of clothing she was wearing be a nice bright color. The Maisy series show a style that looks like it was painted onto the page which gives it a nice touch. The plotline of the book was that Maisy wanted to go swimming, but needed to change into a swimsuit in order to get into the pool. The voice I heard was joyful and excited like when a child is getting ready to go swimming in their pool.
The illustrations in Maisy Goes Swimming were colorful and created an eye catching effect. The style of both the words and illustrations were fun and have a realistic effect as they seem hand-painted.
Since it is a short picture book, Maisy Goes Swimming had a simple plot that was very straight forward and cute as she wanted to go swimming and eventually got undressed and went swimming.
Throughout the book the voice I heard was light and fun as Masiy got ready to go swimming.
I did not mind this book. It is a short book and a good introduction book to introduce young children to and get them acclimated to reading and also is interactive. It is a very simple book about Maisy wanting to go swimming and children can be fully engaged in the book by lifting different parts to prepare Maisy to swim. I think it is a good young learner book.
This Maisy title is now published as an interactive book that will delight small people everywhere. Before Maisy can go swimming, she needs to take off all her clothes. The child listening can help by sliding her hat up and her boots down. Open her coat and cardigan then pull her trousers, bloomers and socks down and her T-shirt up. Then you can pull on her togs and make Maisy swim in the pool. The moveable items in this book will have quite a short life in the hands of a toddler but they will get enormous enjoyment out of it in the process.
I really like how this is an interactive book. Kids love playing and touching things. It makes it more fun for them so this book is perfect! You get to help Maisy get ready to go swimming. Kids get to pull tabs and lift up flaps to help undress Maisy so she can go swimming! This is a very fun book for kids!
I took this book at Christmas to read with my niece. She loved it! She really liked interacting with the book. She also loves to swim so getting undressed and dressing to go swimming is something that excites her. She read it many times over the course of our Christmas dinner, taking it to various people to read with her. 4.5 stars.
I liked how interactive this one was; definitely kept Z entertained... kinda weird to be undressing a cartoon character, but I guess it works... Z is still a little rough with these types of picture books, but I guess it's a good time to start training her not to rip stuff out...
Beware, my toddler wanted to rip all the sliding pieces and extra things off. Only get if you're willing to risk it or know your toddler won't destroy the book in five seconds flat. Ugh.
