Interesting story of a whistleblower who revealed very sophisticated nuclear weapon program in Israel. I am still not sure why everyone looks the other way and still there is talk whether or not Israel has nuclear weapons. They do and they have it in quantities.
Main problem with this information is that saying this out loud would prove how all of the non-proliferation treaties are just rules for thee but not for me. I cannot but help myself thinking that nuclear weapons should have been made widely available - all the treaties just result in establishing uneven balance (where west played dirty role during the Cold War with it's proxy states, Israel included) that just threats with even more escalation.
Book is written by the journalist that directly worked on Vanunu's story (he did the initial interview, got Vanunu to UK, organized everything for the story to be published and later worked hard to help Mordechai to be released as soon as possible from prison).
We get the picture of the man who fought for his country [during his national service], managed to get into high-tech job in a secret installation that he presumed was working on on thing, only to find out it was something completely different and much bigger in scope. In parallel, getting into contact with people of other political views (especially Arab students) made Vanunu see his country through completely different lens (that started changing even when Vanunu felt different way of interaction with his colleagues because of his Northern Africa origin). Obviously Israel was, and remains, a highly militarized enclave that does not see any other option than never-ending war. And to enforce this they just had to have social discrimination put in place, there is just no other way to keep such social structure in place. I mean, when you just look at critique of Vanunu because he changed his religion - something that was normal even under [at the time called] communist regimes - clearly shows that state of Israel and secularism are not something that goes hand in hand. Again, this is Middle East, people living in deep, deep past so it is understandable, and just shows parallels between Israel and its neighbors and competitors in the region.
It is interesting how even members of Jewish diaspora (one of the journalists working with author) saw Vanunu as something weird, because is it possible that someone from Israel would decide to talk about its secrets? It just shows how close this society is, how powerful bond is, it seems to be for all means and purposes more akin to theocracy. Is it then weird Israel created contacts and cooperation with other very closed societies, from South Africa through dictatorships in South America?
Vanunu decides to reveal the secret of Dimona, but falls victim to his own behavior - he just wants to be left alone, wants to marry and have children. For all means and purposes this is very sensitive man who found himself at the crossroads - his country was obviously doing something it should not and thus was not working on any peace plan. Also presence of huge quantities of very modern nuclear weapons definitely wont create basis for any peace in the region. So he decides to do what he needs to do, while suffering internal conflict, to the point of not knowing where he belongs at all. His loneliness will prove to be his undoing.
Israel's reaction is again understandable (but thankfully late because story run nevertheless) from the national security point of view. But again from international law point of view it is anything but. And this is where that superiority complex of Israel again finds its expression - it seems that whatever they do, western powers will never criticize it. Which is I guess good for Israel and they should milk it to the very end, because hey BSDM is weird dynamics game.
Vanunu will end up isolated, serving hard penalty for 18 years, and remaining under virtual isolation even when he was released. He payed the price but he was willing to do it, and for that I have nothing but respect for the man. Unfortunately it did not change the western politics, they still play the role of "useful idiot" when it comes to Israel's actions in the Middle East.
Look. I'm back to non-fiction. I'm sick of trying with the fiction and them lying around my romo, untouched, un-dog-earred: just constant mementos of my failure. I can't do it.
