Die Große Kinderbibel

Rate this book

..." I find the Bible a very strange book to read to children, and while all the books I read with my kids are subject to editorial comment, the Bible gets edited and discussed much more than others. After all, it's full of sex and violence in a degree that I would never accept in any other book to which I would expose my young children! I've looked at a lot of "children's Bibles" trying to find one I can work with. I settled on this one because it has modernized language and generally engaging storytelling, but actually remains pretty close to the content of the adult Bible. That way I, not an editor somewhere, am the one who gets to choose what stories I want to deal with. It also has lovely illustrations and borders on every page.

A good children's Bible that covers a lot of content faithfully. It doesn't shy away from telling some of the less glamorous bible stories.

The authors sometimes provides some of their own thoughts that at times stray from the Scripture, and occasionally provide snippets of historical context to supplement the text.

The illustrations are beautiful, but always portray the Israelite characters like they are caucasian movie stars. The portraits of Jesus are guilty of being overly impassive and serene, for example, when Jesus is driving out people in the temple. We know from the Bible that Jesus feels righteous anger, but illustrators don't tend to want to present any "negative" emotions on his face.

Overall, I enjoyed reading through this with my children and I'm sure we'll revisit it again.

My sister and I are reading this one. She's six, and she said she wanted to know what some of her friends in pre-school believed in. Isn't she the coolest? Ah, I'm so proud.

Murray Watts on sepittänyt Raamatun kertomuksiin uusia yksityiskohtia, joista osa on silkkaa hölynpölyä.

A very nice and colorful edition of Bible stories for children. I only saw a few minor problems with this edition. One is substituting the work "happy" for "blessed" in the beautitudes. Although "happy" is more likely than "blessed" to be in a child's vocabulary they simply don't come close enough in meaning to be considered synonyms. Also the Sermon on the Mount is not given the attention it deserves since it is the most compact and complete expression of Jesus' work and what he wants to see in his followers. And I would like to see, at the end of a children's Bible, some kind of story bridge connecting the stories and characters in the Bible with the stories of Christians during the Reformation and even more recently to draw a parallel between the two and demonstrate the continuation of this ongoing train of God relating to and being involved with his/her creation. This could be done briefly in 7-10 pages and include a few examples of people who practicd their faith despite the cost (Dirk Willems). However this is still an excellent book that I would highly recommend to any family.

Beautifully illustrated Bible story book suitable for mid-elementary school and up. Even the marginal decorations are unique to each story. Excerpts from wisdom literature, prophets and epistles are included as well as the more traditional stories. I like that Watts retells in modern language, but doesn't add a lot of invented detail. Neither is there devotional application. This straight Bible approach means readers don't need to worry about a sectarian point-of-view they might not agree with, but I would have appreciated some suggested questions for discussion.
