Learn the nuts and bolts of SharePoint 2010 the fun and easy way Microsoft SharePoint, the powerful collaboration tool, sometimes blurs the line between technical and non-technical users. Whether you're an administrator who needs to install and configure SharePoint or a non-techie who's been charged with managing content on a SharePoint portal, this book will make your job easier. You'll find the nuts-and-bolts information that enables you to install and configure a SharePoint portal, plus specific solutions for SharePoint issues and the knowledge you need to design, populate, and maintain portal areas. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 For Dummies breaks a complex topic into understandable pieces so you can succeed with SharePoint. CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.
I didn’t read this book in full, cover to cover, but I got what I needed out of the relevant chapters and have no reason to go through everything else. I was made the SharePoint authority for my department at work a couple years ago and was provided this book as a way to learn the basics. I am not and never intended to become a true, blue SharePoint expert, so I can’t say whether this book covers enough material or how well the included material was condensed into this Dummies series entry, but I can say it was more than good enough to get me started. I learned what I can and can’t do in SharePoint, discovered features which weren’t available due to administrator restriction (and some that were missing due to outdated versioning), the author addressed the platform’s shortcomings openly (and provided workarounds, if available), and I was able to use the knowledge I gleaned to accomplish my ultimate task of utilizing SharePoint’s wiki feature to build a collaborative documentation library for my department. Getting people started quickly and easily is generally the point of the “for Dummies” books. SharePoint 2010 for Dummies wasn’t a perfect book (so many typos) but it performed that basic function admirably and ended up being the only resource I used to learn my way around the titular platform.
I really liked that the book explain what Sharepoint is from multiple view points. It is a product, platform, toolkit and reference architecture. The last one seems out of place in a "for dummies" book. Presumably if you know what a reference architecture is, you aren't in the target audience for the book.
There are many screenshots and "how to do" lists. I picked it up because dummies books are a faster read to get an overview. Which I did.
A good foundation for learning to leverage SharePoint to its potential for any organization. I read this with a very minimal working understanding of SharePoint. It was basic enough for the casual reader, and had just enough technical content to lend credibility to the writer. Lots of information including additional resources.
