The Art of Fabric Collage: An Easy Introduction to Creative Sewing

Rate this book
Fabric collage is a new method of quilting that gives every sewer the ability to express personal creativity while learning innovative sewing techniques. In The Art of Fabric Collage, designer Rosemary Eichorn uses a friendly, personal approach to show how to move beyond traditional quilting into a fascinating area she herself pioneered. Eichorn gives readers tips on experimenting with color, design, and fabric in creating their own distinctive fabric collages. Instructions are included for a variety of surface design techniques, from free-motion stitching and soft-edge applique to continuous-strip prairie points and intriguing closures. She shows step by step how to use fabric collage to create artful vests, jackets, quilts, wall hangings, and more. Advice on how to adapt garment patterns for a variety of figure-flattering styles and construction techniques is also included.

While I don't subscribe to the author's personal aesthetic, I think that's a good thing; everyone has their own style. The author's technique is explained in depth and detail and is adaptable to many different aesthetics. I found her techniques fun and non-fussy. I picked it up years ago and found it very helpful and inspiring to my own fabric collage practice. I'd say this book is appropriate for beginner to intermediate fabric artists, but advanced artists may find nothing new; although I still use many things I probably picked up from reading it, I have not needed to return to the book in quite awhile.

Incredible beautiful introduction to an offbeat art form. The sewing suggestions are quite interesting, this is worth a look. this kind of sewing is not really for the beginner, I'd suggest at least a moderate sewing knowledge to attempt, but you don't have to sew a stitch to appreciate the artistry within.

This book speaks to fabric collage on clothes, which isn't mentioned in the title or on the cover. Maybe I would have liked it better if I had realized it'd be a book on sewing clothes with fabric collage. The art and clothes also seem very dated.

Looked like a mishmash of upholstery scraps, made into clothes.

I can either creatively write or creatively sew, but I don't have the neurons and stamina for both. Which is why I wish I could be Triplicate Girl**.
