When some low-life malware from the wrong side of the Internet comes after your fancy laptop, you call for McAfee antivirus software. When some Tinsel town ne’re-to-wells hassle your hot teen recording artist, you call for Kerry and Terry, the McAfee twins.
They have red hair, a pink Harley and a street-wise attitude seasoned with more wisecracks and putdowns than the law allows. At 25, they’ve already been around the block a few times (when it comes to crime fighting) because they run Double Indemnity Investigations of West Los Angeles.
When Bethany (aka “the gum-pop phenom”) walks in front of their camera in disguise during a routine stakeout of an apartment in the bad part of town, she jumps to the conclusion the twins are “stinking paparazzi.” Just moments earlier, Kerry had been thinking how well they blended into the neighborhood in their trashed rental car, just a couple of “harmless crackheads or hookers making an honest living.”
A fight ensues—and without giving away why the three women end up at a no-tell motel that smells “like the place where mildew goes to die”—the story is soon racing like a Harley out of hell through a plot jam-packed with twists, turns and hijinks. It’s a plot to die for.
And people are dying, mostly around Bethany, and as a discerning reader, you might ask if “psychopathic killer” ought to be added to the rich and spoiled singer’s long list of issues. Bethany’s on the run and while the twins are chasing her the cops—who don’t see the humor in this caper—are trying to pin the murders on Kerry and/or Terry.
The snap, crackle and pop you hear while reading “The Hellraiser of the Hollywood Hills” is not your breakfast cereal, it’s Jennifer Colt’s smart, high-energy writing. The characters, while a bit over the top at times in a good way, are memorable even though they aren’t the kind of people you’ll have over to dinner, and there’s plenty of snappy dialogue for everyone.
It’s nice to see the McAfee Twins back in their fourth very enjoyable novel that will keep you guessing until the last page.

Enjoyed. The fifth in the series about crime solving twins. Easy to read and stay interested in. Funny. Read the others first.

Now, that's entertainment! I loved this one. I would describe it as an ultra hip cozy mystery with a little more bite, lots of screwball comedy, a little suspense, and enough, but not too much, romance. The characters and their actions and situations are so well written I was right along with them; it was like I was on a wild ride with two great buds hit with one incredible, sometimes hilarious, situation after another and the ride was moving so fast and I was having such a good time I didn't have a chance to notice if I was missing anything.
The main characters--the twins--are very likeable and fun and very different from what's on the market. The supporting characters, the ones that you expect to stay with the series, are a variety of quirky, fun and lovable personalities. I must be the only one on the planet who didn't think the pop princess was supposed to be any specific person currently in the media. The person I pictured as I was reading was Haley Bennet's character, Cora, in the movie Music & Lyrics.
Although this is far from my favorite genre--paranormal romance, I do love a good book and this series is so fresh and fun and funny I'm hooked on it. When I buy a book it's to be entertained, and this one is highly entertaining. I think this one would satisfy the readers of the Stephanie Plum series, the younger cozy sleuths series (such as Charlaine Harris's Shakespeare series if they would like some humor or screwball with their cozy), and Chic Lit Comedy.

In the latest entry to this very funny and enjoyable series, the two young PIs (and identical re-headed twins to boot) find themselves helping young troubled singing star Bethany (a la Lohan, Spears) who keeps running away from her sleazy producer Claude's guardianship. Claude wants them the twins to act as bodyguards/babysitters to ensure Bethany doesn't get into trouble while on what may be her final tour, given her recent antics. They agree to this against their better judgment and right away, they suspect there is more to this situation than meets the eye. Why is Bethany frantic until she A(very soon) turns 18 years old? What is the real story behind Bethany's mother, who allegedy died drugged out and destitute?
Where other established series authors would have just done this story by-the-numbers, in Colt's more than capable hands, she turns in another winning and witty caper involving the McAfees. There are some real laugh-out-loud moments here and Colt deserves a much wider audience. If you're an Evanovich or Hiaasen or Lutz fan, what are you waiting for? This series is for you.

But i will say, it was slightly disappointing. Took forever to find out what the mystery was and there was never a point where I felt like I couldn't put it down. I have a feeling this may be my last trip w/ the McAffee twins since it took over 6 years to get this one published, but I hope that they will get a chance to play out in a novel as good as The Butcher Of Beverly Hills was

I adore Kerry and Terry McAfee - I've even been known to laugh out loud when reading the other books in this series. Sadly, I think this is my least favorite of the McAfee Twins series. It lacked the humor I've seen in the other books and the story itself seemed so different from what we've seen before. I guess I would describe the other books as light and fun while this one was bizarre and sluggish.
