Nel Libro Di Laura: Petrarcas Liebesgedichte in Der Renaissance /La Poesie Amoureuse de Petrarque a la Renaissance /La Poesia Lirica Di Petrarca Nel ...

Rate this book

No autorytet po prostu. Wszystko to niezbyt mądre.

To miejscami dosłowna kalka z Petrarki. No gość genialny.

Interesting poems, but Nicholas Kilmer's translations feel rather stilted in their literalness. The turns in his sonnets are particularly striking and illuminating -- I don't think I quite grasped "the turn" until I read these:

"Diana did not please her lover more
When by some chance quite naked
He saw her standing in cold water,

Than the wild hill girl,
Washing a light cloth in the bright air,
Pleased me.

The sky is burning. I am shaking with cold." (52)

The man knows how to end a poem!

Some other badass turns:
"If I laugh sometimes, and sing,
It is because I have no other hiding place." (From 102)

"As lightning strikes thunder.
And she greeted me." (From 110)

Which isn't to say he doesn't sometimes know how to start a poem as well:
"Now silence. Earth and wind,
Wild animals, birds -- sleep takes them in.
Night turns the wheel full of stars,
And the sea, motionless in its deep bed." (From 164)

"I keep to myself and my thoughts,
Measuring the empty field slowly, pacing it off.
My eyes search nervously, watching for footprints
Pitted into the sand by human walking." (From 37)

Need to find a more cogent translation.

„Jam jest jej chwałą, ona - moją cnotą”

Piękny zbiór sonetów Petrarki, stanowiący obraz miłości gorliwej, bolesnej, obsesyjnej i nieszczęśliwej, a także studium głębokiej żałoby. Bardzo emocjonalna lektura.

Kilka fragmentów, o których nie chciałbym zapomnieć:

• „Kiedy wspominam i miejsce, i porę,
Gdzie zatraciłem siebie, gdy wspominam
Pęta miłosne, w których każda gorycz
Była słodyczą, radość - łez przyczyną,

Szczęśliwy jestem, bo w sercu mam ogień,
Tęsknota go tam usilna zażegła,

• „To nasze kruche i zwodnicze szczęście,

The prose was wonderful and amazing.

However, I'm conflicted about his true intentions, I obviously don't know enough context about his actions towards Laura (likely Laura De Noves, they have the same death date) considering she barely acknowledged him. Was she not allowed to? or did she simply not want to? or furthermore, did she not know? (I suspect it's not the latter at all).

Still, the yearning was beautiful without the context.

Now, petrarca himself worked for the church, thus he wasn't allowed to marry but still he fathered 2 children.

It's not that Laura De Noves was a simple peasant either, she was married off at 15 to Hugues II The Sade, possible ancestor of Marquis the Sade.

I liked the Dutch translations a lot! the translator really worked to keep the same grammar and length of his proze. I loved that the original text (in Italian obv) was present too.

Also, not considering he was 23 and she was 17 (already married).

Sonety plné lásky a bolesti, Petrarca zachytil všetky emócie lásky, mrzí ma však, že vydanie, ktoré som čítal ja, neobsahovalo kompletnú zbierku sonetov

Ten chłop osiągnął chyba jakiś inny poziom bycia delulu, skoro napisał 366 wierszy o babce, którą kochał przez 21 lat, a z którą NIGDY NAWET NIE ROZMAWIAŁ.
