This book is not without its issues for beginning sewers, but the designs are fabulous and inspiring! I looked at a ton of apron books in the bookstore before I picked this one based on the diversity and flattering silhouettes of many of the designs. To date I have made three of the styles: two for myself and one for my mother. Also, I had an apron-making crafternoon with friends using this book and it was a huge hit. Beautiful photography and not a bad color choice in the book, which is often hard to find in craft books, unfortunately.
A few things to watch out for: 1) A full-sized pattern sheet is included (no photocopying! yay!) but you'll need some tracing paper or pattern paper to use it because they are all overlapped. Just go buy some Pattern-Ease or sew-in interfacing when you buy your apron fabric.
2) None of the aprons are lined. However you can either choose fabric that is sturdy enough on its own or add your own lining if you are an experienced sewer.
3) The aprons are sized for the models in the photographs--it shouldn't make much of a difference except you may want to lengthen the waist ties so you can make a comfortable bow.
4) The women in the book are model-thin, so stay away from some of the designs which make them look even slightly bulky. The Gypsy Spirit apron in particular is one to watch out for.
I was pleasantly surprised to pick up this book based on the cover photo and find out that it was a really great apron book! Many designs are straight-up copies of vintage aprons that have been popular for over 50 years, but there are also some really great modern aprons in this book, too. Thank you Mr. Merrett for inlcuding not only a ver ADORABLE children's aprons, but some nice looking aprons for dudes as well. Patterns are included in the book and instructions are straightforward, a great book for any beginning sewer or apron-maniac like myself.
An apron can be a useful thing and this book of full of designs, both practical and dressy. You're sure to find the ideal apron for yourself or for a gift.
