My first favorite astrologer was Grant Lewi, and legend has it he saw his death in his chart, and took out his first life insurance policy that year, a western fable if ever there was one! Lewi is the ultimate modern astrologer, or what we think of as astrology, but was doing it long before it became a hippie cliche, so he stands at a unique time in American history, right after the depression, but before the cold war, a lost generation. Lewi believed very much that astrology could help humanity advance its thinking on psychological issues, and would save hours of therapy, so that therapists could get at the heart of a patient's problems right off the bat, if he had their chart, or as Lewi called it 'the vitasphere.' In a way, Lewi was rethinking ancient astrology and trying to make it applicable to the modern world, so that we felt freed by the stars, instead of imprisoned by them. But the freedom was hard fought and in "Heaven Knows What" Lewi subjects everyone to a character, and gives the most artistic of modern credos, 'that the more we reflect our true character, the more successful we'll be.'

Mathematically, "Heaven Knows What," takes the 144 possible Sun/Moon combinations in astrology, and weaves them into a tale of the 144 possible character types in the world, and this is so beautiful my heart stops to think about it, but goes on. How did Lewi do this? Truthfully, I don't know, but he was a very gifted astrologer, with a real mission to change the world through astrology, so we could all reach our potential, but died before Scientology took his mantle, and outlawed astrology, like all religions, for being too true. I'm not sure "Heaven Knows What" will teach you about the meaning of the Sun and Moon, but it will give you a feel for the most artistic interpretations of the signs, and how they reflect in an almost cinematic way. I think it was Lewi's goal to make astrology so popular and accepted that middle class Americans in the F.D.R. years would have copies of "Heaven Knows What" out on their coffee table for conversation, and he may have succeeded. Lewi gives an ephemeris to know the Sun/Moon signs of your friends, so you can play parlor games with them in an era before TV, maybe with the radio on in the background. Now all you need is the internet to gather this information, and a birthday. If you have the gumption, or self will to do this, it's fun, and you can see the general character type your friends, loved ones, or family members, fit into!

I fondly call this book the 'Book of Truth'. The moon charts are off every so often, so I do suggest cross referencing with another source if you are unsure of a moon sign. Grant Lewi was original and eerily insightful in his summations, especially when considering the time period during which it was published (Copyright 1935).

Good for beginner astrologers. Only goes up to year 1999 for chart placements. Most of this information is now in apps but it's always fun to read different perspectives.
