John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
In this easily digestible book, John MacArthur provides a helpful breakdown of the Lord’s Prayer. Walking through each of its petitions, MacArthur expounds theologically and applies practically the prayer given to us by Jesus himself.
If you, like me, have ever found the Lord’s Prayer to be something that you can at times catch yourself reciting by rote (especially in a corporate context) without truly praying the words you are saying, I believe this book will be of help to you. It brings to light the wisdom of God in providing a pattern of prayer in which God is always the centre; He is from the outset given His rightful place as Father, Holy God and Lord of all; a prayer which dedicates three petitions to bringing the needs of sinful humans before their holy and loving Father, and which ends as it began - by refocusing our attention on God whose kingdom, power and glory are ultimate, unending and unchanging, forever and ever.
A quick caveat - I gave this book four stars instead of five because there are some areas in which I disagree somewhat with MacArthur, particularly on secondary issues like eschatology (which comes up at least once in this book, from memory). Overall though, I am thankful for the vast majority of MacArthur’s thinking and teaching in this book, and I am sure I will return to it in the future.
May we heed the words of Jesus when he tells us how to pray, and may we find a deeper peace and joy and dependence on God as Jesus’ pattern of prayer becomes the pattern of prayer for all those who belong to Him.
