It's Not PMS, It's You!: A Totally Non-Hormonal Analysis of Male Behavior

Rate this book
"BUST’s hilarious Queen of Crosswords now has men squarely in her crosshairs.” - Emily Rems, Managing Editor, BUST Magazine

For every woman who has pulled her hair out trying to explain—for the 46th time—the importance of putting the toilet seat down, there’s a man snickering, “Someone's on the rag.” And this book is for that justifiably furious gal.

The war between the sexes has raged for millennia, and It's Not PMS, It's You! is a hilarious, take-no-prisoners reconnaissance mission into the minds and souls of men and the things they do to infuriate women. Beginning with a completely scientific, fairly non-hormonal look at the history of the term “on the rag” and ending with the “Diary of a Break Up in One Full Menstrual Cycle,” this lighthearted guide looks at:

- Who should fund the medical research into why men do what they do. (Hint: It's definitely NOT the government)

- Why men hate to talk about their feelings (with four separate mentions of the word “penis”)

- An absolutely foolproof method for sustaining a long-term relationship, and why it could kill you

Deb Amlen is a humorist and crossword puzzle constructor whose work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The New Jersey Star-Ledger and other respectable, mainstream publications she tells her parents about when she calls to borrow money. At other times, she is part of the outlaw posse that writes The Onion/A.V. Club crossword puzzles and is also the “X Games” columnist for BUST Magazine, but don’t bring that up if you run into her folks at the Early Bird Special. It just makes them crazy.

She also writes a humor column called “Next Exit” about life in New Jersey for Springfield Patch.com.

Her first book, “It’s Not PMS, It’s You” (Sterling Publishing) is in stores and available online now, and she figures that, if she did it right, this book about male-female relationships will have absolutely no educational or life-changing qualities whatsoever. Please read it anyway.

She lives in New Jersey with her family and her Extremely Spunky Border Terrier™, Jade.

This is a very quick and humorous read detailing the numerous differences between men and women, why we react the way we do, and how it doesn't always tie in to the fact that we are "on the rag" or "getting our period".

Ladies, if you are anything like me, I know you hate it when men address our every thought or feeling as an irrational effect of "our time of the month". We know that women are naturally emotional beings, seeking other emotional beings in which to confide, vent, and otherwise express our frustrations and joys to. We are not always looking for a solution and are happy to just have some well deserved sympathy!

Men, on the other hand, tend to take the Emotion Expressway in an effort to bypass all the sappy confusion and get straight to the heart of the issue. Emotions be damned, we are going to FIX this thing and move on to more important things - like sports, beer, and sex!

Deb Amlen, in an endearing 'I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar' sort of way, informs her readers to shuck off the money making schemes of relationship self-help books, 1000 ways to get flat abs DVD's, and other society and gender related BS, and realize that there is nothing wrong with US - WE don't have to change a thing! Hold those grudges, eat that chocolate, be the bitch that you must be to get through to your man!!

Ok, I may be taking things a little further than Deb did - haha! She fills her book with cute antidotes, Facebook-like snippets, jokes, and a hilarious peek into a new relationship between two people who just met and totally misunderstand one anothers intentions and feelings.

Covering topics like "Selective Deafness", "Fragile Male Ego (One Upping each other)", and "The F- Word (no, not THAT F-word!)" you are bound to find something you can relate to!

7/29/2010 I won this book (Thank you Deb [the author:]) in the PMS contest at the group The Next Best Book. So far it's really funny and I being funny lady, not my words, my husband's, I'm really enjoying it. I'm on page 54.

I just finished Deb's book It's Not PMS It's You and I loved it. At first glance one might think it's a male bashing book, but it's absolutely not. It is about the hilarious differences between the male and the female species. My favorites were the Gone With the Wind chapter and at the end the Mike and Christy blogs. Speaking of Gone With The Wind one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen(while being from Atlanta) when a friend of mine, who was really edgy crude, while visiting a "Tara" site in Jonesboro, Georgia, went up into an upper room of a historical house and leaning out the window sing songing in her most southern accent and bumping her rear end back and forth over a crowd of sight-seers "Oh, Ashley, How you do go on, and on,and on!" The crowd was aghast !!!

The Mike and Christy blogs were hilarious and yet realist Lay off the crossword puzzles and write another book Deb. We'll be waiting!!!

This one had me at it's resemblance to a chocolate bar! It was nearly as sweet actual chocolate. A witty look at the male "animal" infused with classic literature references and anecdotes that themselves are destined to become classics. Pay attention to the banter in the footnotes. I must have worried the other riders on the metro by laughing aloud repeatedly at the author and the editor "arguing" in the margins. I found it so funny I had to read some portions aloud to friends on the phone, and much to his dismay, even my husband. A quick, fun, light and easy MUST READ!

A very funny book which had my daughter and I laughing out loud, even from the packaging of the book! Deb Amlen has a wonderful sense of humour and is skilled at telling funny stories. A fast read which will deservedly be passed on for our female friends to share and discuss.

I haven't read a book that had me laughing from cover to cover in many years. A fun, quick read. All in good fun, but more truth than fiction to it!

Wonderful reinforcement of what we (women) know about ourselves and our
partners of the other sex. Lovely packaging makes it a great gift!

"It's not PMS, it's you" provided me with wonderful entertainment without insulting for being a male member of the species.
