This was a really enjoyable read! Sometimes, less is more, and that definitely applies here. The book provides clear, no-nonsense explanations of what works (and what doesn’t) in gardening, along with the reasoning behind it. It’s well-written, occasionally witty, and complemented by pleasant illustrations throughout.

The way the information is presented really clicked with me—I honestly gained a deeper understanding of fundamental gardening principles from this book than from much thicker ones on the same subject. It also covers a wide range of niche plants, though I did feel it was more suited to temperate growing zones, with fewer subtropical and tropical plants included.

The tables at the back of the book will be a valuable reference for years to come, and I can't wait to expand my plantings thanks to the insights I’ve gained from this book!

I love this little book! Who'd have thought that a humble collection of notes could be so charming and interesting!

I've owned Little's "Companion Planting..." and "Organic Gardening" for about a decade and I refer to them regularly - whenever I put something new in the patch. I have other books on these topics - much lauded books - but Brenda's style and format are so easy and pleasurable to read, that I rarely consult the others . It feels like Brenda is a much loved but late neighbour, who used to give me tips and anecdotes over our joint fence.

I was inspired to write this review after reading an article that mentioned the book:
