Moral Courage As a pastor and theologian Bonhoeffer expressed to the world why we should all defend the Jews against the Third Reich atrocities. Instead of remaining safely in the U.S. and preaching these views he chose to return to his beloved Germany and do all that he could from within. Germany does indeed have it's own World War II heroes... Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave his all.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a theologian, martyr, spiritual writer, musician, pastor, and author of poetry and fiction. Famous for his stand against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party, his beliefs and convictions ultimately cost him his life. Bonhoeeffer was hanged for high treason just three weeks before Hitler committed suicide. Gooddard has captured poignantly the last two years of Bonhoeffer’s life, and in particular, his long battle of wits with Gestapo interrogators to on one hand, remain faithful to God and his own convictions, while at the same time, avoid betraying his spiritual mentors and family. I had read this book when I was at Belmont during a religion history course, but found it far more meaningful as a mature Christian. In his work “Ethics”, he asked “Who Stands Firm?’ – his answer: “Only the one for whom the final standard is not his reason his principles, his conscience, his freedom, or his virtue, but who is ready to sacrifice all these when in faith and sole allegiance to God, he is called to obedience and responsible action.” Bonhoeffer was a true model of Jesus’ teachings, and lived a life worthy of more contemplation. Throughout his imprisonment, he shared his food and clothes, wrote grateful letters to his family and fiancé’ Maria, prayed with believers and non-believers alike, assisted the sick and injured during bombings of the prisons, and never gave up hope that he was in the exact place and time that God wanted him to be.
Lots of unexplained history. Really enjoyed his letters and prison journey. Also, very interesting conspiracies he was involved in. Inspiring man of God!
