Covering the years 400 to 1154, this book has little to say about the Romans, Picts or Britons, much to say about the Angles, Saxons, Norse and Normans. The Irish come up primarily in terms of their contribution to the Church after their reconciliation with Rome. These are apparently those cultural/political factors which primarily constituted what became England in the opinion of the author. Not being in any way expert with this period, the introductory nature of the text was well suited to my needs and the clear writing style of the author much appreciated. While political history comprises the first few chapters, most of the book is a study of how the various cultural groups and classes actually lived.
