ALTERNATIVE HEALTH / REIKI""The Complete Book of Traditional Reiki offers a comprehensive foundation for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. Amy Rowland has presented a lucid and straightforward presentation of the Reiki teachings that will serve any sincere student and prove to be a constant source of inspiration for a lifetime of practice. I highly recommended it "" --Lawrence Ellyard, author of Reiki Meditations for Beginners and Reiki: 200 Questions and Answers for BeginnersReiki practitioners direct universal energy into the physical body through hands-on and energy-field healing to support the client in recovering health and reclaiming well-being. An easy-to-learn form of energy medicine, Reiki is becoming commonplace in such conventional settings as hospitals, hospices, and psychotherapy practices because it relaxes, relieves stress, reduces and eliminates pain, accelerates healing, and helps support the gentle restoration of the body's natural balance. It is a unique healing art in that it can be learned by anyone, with no special knowledge of anatomy needed. The Complete Book of Traditional Reiki takes the reader step-by-step through a traditional Reiki level I class. It discusses Reiki's origins and purpose, describes the attunement process by which a student is imbued with the power to channel life-force energy, and gives complete instructions for standard and optional healing hand positions. The first book to serve as a teaching manual, an extensive reference work for students, and compelling reading for those considering taking a Reiki class, this updated edition includes new information on the history of Reiki and the Reiki principles and features never-before-published photographs and a translation of the Usui Memorial in Japan, a tribute to the founder of Usui Reiki.AMY Z. ROWLAND is a certified Usui Reiki master with additional training in Usui Reiki Ryoho, Gendai, and Komyo Reiki. She began her studies in 1987 with Rev. Beth Gray, a Reiki master trained by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, the first Westerner to teach and practice Reiki outside Japan. Rowland teaches workshops on the Reiki principles and on Reiki and intuition and is the author of Reiki for the Heart and Soul and Intuitive Reiki for Our Times. She lives in Pennsylvania.

AMY Z. ROWLAND, M.A., is best known for her books about Reiki, a form of bodywork and energy medicine, which she has been teaching since 1994, but she is happy when readers discover her other writing as well: fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. As a child, she was encouraged by her parents, who met each other in art school, to be creative. When she realized (at about age six) that focusing on becoming an artist would result in even more parental advice, she decided she would rather write. She hasn't really stopped since.

I wavered on how I would rate this book as I read it. Mostly because I judged the credibility of the author when she said you have to turn reiki on. You don’t. Once you get your level one attunements, Reiki is always on. It’s a matter of whether or not you’re going to use it or share it. Feeling something in your hands isn’t an indication of reiki being “on” or “off” as some people don’t feel anything and they’re still just as effective as any practitioner that feels something strongly. That’s how I was taught anyhow. It’s also in a book written by someone who was taught directly by Hawayo Takata.
Another thing this author said is that the shamanism tradition requires the healer to take on the sickness in need of healing in order for that person to become free of healing. As a student of shamanism I have never heard of this. It’s an absolutely false statement and has no integrity as you cannot generalize the shamanic tradition in such a manner. There are endless shamanic teachings, paths, lineages, and traditions. It seems that the author took what she heard about ONE tradition and assumed it’s the same for all others. It’s not a true statement.

There were several redeeming aspects of the book that, if those 2 previous statements weren’t made so early on in the book, would have earned the book 5 stars. One of those aspects being a section on how Hawayo Takata taught her students in many different ways. That makes up for the “reiki on/off” thing.
I’m glad I kept reading to the end.

Read this back in the 80s. It's the bible of Reiki, in my humble opinion.

I cant really rate this book as it is the first reiki book I have read. It was informative but not sure how it stands up to the other books on reiki. I will update my review once I read a few more books on the subject.
