Beginning reader
This book was only just okay. I chose it because it has photos of Lego people doing Lego activities, which I know would interest a lot of children, especially boys. Although it has short sentences, and not a lot of words on each page, the words used are actually pretty difficult for beginning readers. It feels more like a transitional reader in language, but looks beginning reader in topic and amount of words on a page. An example sentence is, "A delivery for the supermarket arrives at the railway station." I think a beginning reader should be just a bit simplified, especially when the book is mostly going to appeal to the very young child.
I would use this book as an independent reader for a child who is great at sounding out words and enjoys the challenge of larger words but is intimidated by a lot of words on each page. This book would allow this child to feel successful in reading. It's also great if a child has an especial interest in Legos, because the pictures are really cute little Lego people doing things like fighting Lego fires and shopping in Lego stores.

This book made me so angry. The fact that LEGO has always been quite sexist is basically common knowledge, but this book just seems to be trying to rub it in. There are 70 characters in this book. 10 are women. NONE of the women have jobs. The book is ABOUT the jobs that there are around town and NONE of the women have jobs! According to this book, all women do is go shopping, go to the zoo with children, and get rescued from dangerous situations by men.
The Duplo books are designed for some of the youngest of readers, the most susceptible group to influence, and this is the message we are sending them? NOT pleased.

"Pretty good. I just like that there are firefighters, a helicopter and duplo people. It makes me want to play with my duplo toys. I said I only like little Legos but now I want to play with my duplos too."
Mama thinks it is just a way for Lego to advertise its toys. She doesn't mind if it gets me into reading books. However, she feels there are far better ways to get kids reading that don't involve supporting consumerism and commercialism. I have asked for more books in the series. Mama will probably let me look at them at the library or bookstore, but will not bring them home.

This is a Beginning to read level 1 Lego Duplo book. The illustrations are all made up from Lego bricks that the children could actually make if they had the right Lego's to do so. (I thought that was pretty neat) The story is a basic, but still tells a story. Of events that happen around the town. Firefighters doing their job, police officers doing their job catching a robber stealing a cake. Feeding the right foods to the animals at the zoo. My teen age special needs son enjoyed me reading this book to him, between the text and the illustrations he giggled and smiled throughout this book.

I am sooooo glad to see a Lego book that is not all violence! This is something for your younger kids wanting a Lego book. Just a trip around town and firemen saving the day. Yeah for this book. Ages 2+

I like that it's about legos. I like in the pictures that they build stuff out of legos. I told my Mommy one day that this could be something we'd have to look at to build stuff. We have to look in the book before building something.

This was my sons favorite book for a whole year (3-4). Duplo sets were available at the time that matched those in the story-he loves to reenact them
