The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey

Rate this book
Teena Spencer knows from personal experience what it is to live through those months of hockey mania and endless weeks of playoff insanity, when your partner is sprawled on the couch, knocking back beer and yelling at the TV. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, she decided and proceeded to learn the ins and outs of this increasingly popular game. In The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey , Teena Spencer illuminates the arcane language of the sport (butt-ending and chippy play), the rules (icing), and the rituals (octopus throwing). It's all the teams, the history, the top players, and the trivia, written with clarity and humor. There are details on women's hockey, too. With her colorful ancecdotes and simple, direct style, this is the ultimate guide for any woman new to the game and the traditions that accompany it. The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey is Teena Spencer's answer to hockey-dread.

While I have spent my life convinced that hockey was not a sport worth much attention, that isn't the reason I abandoned this book. The author very clearly and concisely explains all the rules and regulations, but she can't help throwing in various sexual references. Is that really helpful in understanding the meaning of the lines and positions of the players in a sporting event? Not for me. I can find better ways to spend my time and a more uplifting way to learn hockey.

After reading this, I was finally able to tell the difference between icing and offsides. And she includes a top ten hottest hockey player list, which is much more interesting to me than the top ten greatest players lists out there. Gretzky isn't on it.

This is for someone who actually wants to know about hockey. I love hockey and I didn't know half the crap written in this book. And it was... AWESOME! Highly recommended for all girlfriends of hockey-loving men, even if you just skim it. Funny writing, too.

Nick bought this book as a gift when I began dating him in 2002. He plays amateur hockey and I used to watch him play every week. This a humorous book that helped me understand and appreciate the game Nick loves so much.

A great introduction to hockey for hockey girlfriends (or women in general for that matter). Spencer provides the basic on everything from the history to the jargon, with a healthy dose of innuendo too. Highly recommended!
