"The Mammoth Book of How It Happened is a superb collection that provides first-hand accounts in the form of journals, diaries, news reports, and the like. This book offers historical writings of the most monumental events of our time -- military and otherwise.

This book is a collection of contemporary accounts of the battle and more general accounts of what it was like to be in the Navy of the time. I was surprised how many junior officers, and even ordinary seamen, took the trouble to write up long accounts of the battle from their particular viewpoints. This is fascinating material, but it has to be said that it helps if you have a good idea of the background first, as there is little connecting or explanatory material.
