Cattleman's Club #2

Hailey's Game

Rate this book
Cole Jackson and Kyle Harding haven’t got any doubts that Hailey Mathews is up to something, but they ain’t worried. They have their own wicked intentions and the full confidence that one little woman doesn’t stand a chance against two Cattlemen.

Hailey has had enough. Enough of Kyle and his smooth charm. Enough of Cole and his provocations. Not about to trust that either Cattleman has any interest in her other than playing a game, Hailey decides it’s time to show them how it’s done.

However, if things don’t go the way Hailey plans, the consequences might be more than she can pay.

Throughout my life, I’ve always been an avid reader. Reading fed my need to dream and fantasize about what could be. As a latchkey kid I’d spend hours at the library earning those shiny stars the librarian would paste up on the board after my name.

I credit my grandmother’s yearly visits as the beginning of my obsession with romances. When she’d come, she’d bring stacks of romance books, the old fashioned kind that didn’t have sex in them. Imagine my shock when I went to the used bookstore and found out what really could be in a romance novel.

I’ve been writing stories for years and have found a particular love of erotic romances. In this genre, women are no longer confined to a stereotype and plots are no longer constrained to the rational. I love the anything goes mentality and letting my imagination run wild.

I hope you enjoyed running with me and will consider picking up another book and coming along for another adventure.

PLEASE ignore the jaw-droppingly horrific cover.

What you actually get inside is a surprisingly funny and well-written MFM romance, filled with bucketloads of snark and an unexpectedly sweet romance. I first read this quite a while back so a tiny part of me might just have nostalgia glasses on, but I've reread this many times over the years and it's withstood the test of time.

Our heroine Hailey is a sharp-tongued, curvy mechanic who takes crap from nobody. That includes fellow mechanic Kyle, her childhood nemesis, and his best friend/business partner Cole. The three of them have a chequered history which has never really included lust - but now Kyle's decided that Hailey's the one for him.

(It normally irritates me when a hero will decide out of the blue that he wants the heroine, having spent years with other women, but it works this time for me because the rest of the book really builds their relationship. Plus Hailey hasn't exactly been pining away for him either).

Cole, however, has been burnt by love before, so he's determined to stop his best friend from making a terrible mistake. The best way of doing that is clearly wrangling his way into their bed. Hailey, for her part, starts out sceptical (though willing to use them physically) and pretty much never stops busting their balls for the entire book.

The characterisation and dialogue totally make this book for me. All three characters are very sharply defined, and their banter is genuinely entertaining. Hailey's sarcasm plays well with Kyle's easy-going jokes and Cole's dark humour. Also, the climax of the book features a very entertaining scene where Hailey tries to humiliate Cole (though it spectacularly backfires on her). This is definitely one heroine who never loses possession of her spine.

The fact that all three of them are mechanics, and there's a fair number of car scenes/car chat, just makes them more interesting.

This was my favorite book of the series thus far, because it really had all of the elements I look for in a book. There was a plot, although in the beginning I had some trouble following the scheme that Hailey and friends came up with to trap Cole in the "game" she was playing with him. It all became clear later in the book. I liked that Hailey had a long history with Kyle, dating back to childhood when he used to tease her and play pranks on her. I liked how ruthless Kyle and Cole were in pursuing her.

I really enjoy Jenny Penn's writing, and I love/hate that her male characters lack tenderness and don't ever seem to give in. Of the three books, I think Kyle and Cole were my favorite characters. Cole was dynamic and was able to get through some obstacles. Hailey, especially, seemed to have a had time believing these men were really into her.

Hailey was a great character though, I really loved one scene where she was standing with Cole in her garage, before they became intimate, and just whipped her robe off. He said something like "Girl, you have no shame!" Gotta love a girl with brass ones :)

Some parts of the story could've been left out. I didn't understand her connection with Cole but I understand how it could have developed. I also didn't like how Hailey set Cole up and when he and Kyle found out they responded by setting her up (it really hurt her emotionally and all she wanted to do was see Cole's feelings for her).

Haley hates Cole with a passion, the first time he met her he insulted her and she has never forgotten, even if she finds him desirable she makes sure to keep her claws out when he is around. Kyle has wanted Haley for years, but she has always maintained a safe distance and a lot of sass to keep him away, but the time is right for him to make his move.

Kyle's only worry is his best friend and roommate Cole who is becoming more of a liability where Haley is concerned than a partner. Kyle is able to break through Haley's tightly guarded wall, only to have Cole discover that he was not invited to the party. When Haley makes Cole a deal of four weeks without any sex and her as the prize, Cole readily accepts. Haley's plan backfires a little where Kyle is concerned, not to mention she had set another plan in motion that could cost her both the men she loves.

One of my favorite books. I loved the intricately woven story for the Cattleman's Club, each story blends with another in the main plot concerning Cole, but each character is so different and all of them are feisty. This is the type of book that you can't put down until the very last page.

***Reread because I wanted a book with a hot tempered heroine and Haley is it. I hope the next one comes out soon. This is my favorite Jenny Penn novel, it is pretty raw but a ton of fun wrapped into 400+ pages

This by far is my favourite Jenny Penn book!! The interactions with Hailey and Kyle and their history reels you into the story line, both their connections with Cole leads you to wonder how this will play out, and the stubborn, sweetness of the two men in pursuit and capture of Hailey's heart makes the story. Oh, and a whole lot of hot, hot, hot scenes with two and three of them to keep you panting!! This book sets itself apart from other books with each of the men singularly pursuing the girl and openly competing to be the best for her. They work together but each definitely have their own feelings and thoughts on how to treat Hailey - and Hailey ends up benefiting from all that testosterone!

In this book Hailey has a problem make that two, possibly three if you include her attitude. She is one character that really should learn to keep her mouth shut at times. Cole has a big crush on Hailey for the last two to three years(not really clear since it changed midway in the book), but he is not gonna let her run is life, or so he thinks. Kyle has had it bad for Hailey since high school...maybe even grade school, but he is first admitting it now. After years of torment from Kyle, Hailey is reluctant to give over control. In the end it all works out. Good book.

A sexy, sizzling novel involving BDSM as well as a push-pull between two members of the Cattleman's Club and a girl they have known and battled with all their lives. It has a somewhat convoluted plot line but that just makes it more interesting and requires a fairly good level of commitment to get it all sorted out. Some extended bondage that really isn't all that offensive. A fun read for those who are into these story ingredients.

I had been waiting forever for this second Cattleman's club. Hailey, I've been waiting for you to get in trouble with those two guys. Cole and Kyle, I'm glad the two of you caught this filly and roped her in. I liked the dilemma Hailey is in. She's not as bratty as I expected, but still enough that she deserves every spanking. The sex in this was hot. Enjoyed every one of them.

I think Jenny Penn is fast becoming my favourite erotic author. Her books are over in a blink of an eye, they build story line characters and wonerdful sexual tension. Kyle and Cole were awesome especially with there revenge. Hailey deserved them after all the game playing and manipulation. Anyway great book, great sex.

As a continuation of the Cattleman's Club series, this one ratchets the heat up a few notches. Kyle and Cole make for an incredibly dynamic duo, and Ms Penn's ability to write sassy, strong women has never been more true than with Hailey. I found myself holding my breath...and then panting.

Another fun romp, very similar to the first one. The grouchy heroine was a trip. And the bromance between to two guys was endearing and fun.
