From the mind that brought us The Odd 1s Out, Oddballs creator James Rallison is back with five brand new stories from the popular Netflix animated show!
Join James, Max, Echo, and all of your favorite Oddballs characters as they get into epic amounts of preventable trouble. In these five exclusive mini stories, James grows sentient bacteria in his mouth, sells his yard, turns the whole town into ASMR zombies, enrages several birthday girls, and faces his own impending death. And, of course, he learns nothing.
Representation: Black and Asian characters Trigger warnings: Explosions Score: Six points out of ten.
This was a new arrival at one of the two libraries I regularly visit, and I wanted to read this, so I picked it up and read it swiftly. When I finished it, I had mixed thoughts. On the one hand, this was an enjoyable-to-read anthology of five stories; on the other, it was tedious to read, and the book was so far removed from the original YouTube channel I knew. The first part starts with the main character, James Rallison, or James for short, and he wanted a vertical waterslide out of all things, so he signs a contract with another person. That didn't go to plan. The other characters are new to me, since I haven't watched the show, so it wasn't that clear in terms of who they are. The second part is about a loudspeaker (Yes. Really.) forbidding James to do a rant so instead he convinces everyone to wear headphones so they can listen to them instead. Of course, the ending is unexpected, as I saw with the next three stories. To summarise, the third part is about birthdays, the fourth about a living bacteria and the final one is about James' impending death. After all that, it was supposed to be funny. I didn't laugh.

Cute but not my kind of book. I have been experimenting with different genres and graphics/ cartoons are not for me. It was a quick easy read and the stories had good morals for younger readers, hence the 3 stars.
How can you make a main character so unlikable? In certain scenarios, it's ok to root for the scumbag, to wish success for the con man, heck to hope the anti-heroes or criminals to get out ok. But this kid? Self-righteous a-hole who will justify all of his horrible actions in the most roundabout way possible AND never learns his lesson, even if it's by laser-guided karma. 5 stories of an idiot who makes mistakes, ropes in friends (or enablers at this point?) to the inane troubles he causes, and somehow still gets to keep the status quo of eternal f@$##%* with no consequences cuz that's the kind of world these people live in. This is saved from being a one-star book by virtue of some REAL creativity in the ploys, childish schemes, and diversity of people involved. That and it's probably not aimed for me, but for actual children...maybe.
Oddballs is a graphic novel based on a Netflix series and I was so excited to get a gifted copy from Tarcher Perigree because I knew my son would love it. I did not anticipate loving it too!! It’s so funny! I am a pretty serious person so this is saying something. These authors are quite witty and somehow appeal to a tweenage boy and his much older mother seamlessly. We had the best time reading it- it was over too soon!
The youngest member of the household really enjoys the show that this is based on and so was keen to read this graphic novel. Afterwards the child instructed me to read this because it was so fantastic. I think the show is fine, and I think this graphic novel is fine. The stories in this graphic novel really captures the chaotic vibe of the show. I'd say if you (or your child) really like the show, this one's for you.
This graphic novel is basically a bunch of episode ideas from the Oddballs Netflix series that never got made. Each comic is exactly what I would have expected from the show. Though I'm not sure what the implications of the last story line would mean for the show had it continued into a third season.
Overall enjoyable if you liked the Netflix series. But skip able if you've never seen it.
