Miss Julia, a recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow and unceremoniously announces that the child is the bastard son of Miss Julia's late husband. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small Southern community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal-and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence turns her life upside down. With razor-sharp wit and perfect "Steel Magnolia" poise, Miss Julia speaks her mind indeed-about a robbery, a kidnapping, and the other disgraceful events precipitated by her husband's death.
Miss Julia Takes Over -
Miss Julia has come to terms with her onetime rival, Hazel Marie, and is now the guardian of Little Lloyd. Now Hazel Marie has disappeared, and Miss Julia has to find her. With Little Lloyd by her side, she sets off across North Carolina, and encounters enough obstacles and adventures to tax even Miss Julia's amazing and ingenious survival skills.
Ann B. Ross, who taught literature at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, is the author of Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind, one of the most popular Southern debut novels in years, Miss Julia Takes Over, Miss Julia Throws a Wedding, and Miss Julia Hits the Road. She lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
The Miss Julia Series is tied with The Southern Sisters Mysteries by Anne George and The Cat Who Series by Lilian Jackson Braun for my all time favorite series!! The characters are lovable and once you start reading the first one, you just can’t stop! You are on the edge of your seat dying to know what happens next until you get through every book! I searched for years for another great series like this and I couldn’t be happier to have found this one! A true treasure! There aren’t many great writers that can capture my attention like Ann B. Ross has in this series. Well worth the time! If you’re on audible, the narrator is amazing! They are just so fun and enjoyable!
Miss Julia is my aunt. Well, not that my aunt got into all the situations that Miss Julia does, but in the description of the character and her desire to remain a town doyen and present a perfect face to the public. The books are easy to read and have a tendency to make one laugh out loud at Miss Julia and her adventures. I recommend them to anyone who just needs a little laughter for a change.
I just LOVE this series! Miss Julia is a combination of "I Love Lucy" meets "Fried Green Tomatoes". If you have access at the library to books on CD, I highly recommend listening to them. Cynthia Darlow narrates all but one of them and does so with all the charm, grace, and humor of a true southern belle. I just can't say enough good about herself. I am just finishing the last one in the series now, and I will be sad to see it end. I do hope the author has more in store in the future!
I am reading this series with its great characters, especially Miss Julia. I just completed reading Miss Julia Hits the Road, which features her cajoling alot of her church lady friends to raise money by riding in a motorcycle Poker Run, to help other friends keep their homes.
Miss Julia is quite a character who gets herself into some unusual situations. Her mannerisms, comments, and use of idioms reminded me of ladies of my mother's generation. I found myself laughing out loud. A fun, easy read.
I could hardly put this book down from about 70 percent read on. It made me excited and I almost felt I was becoming part of the story I was so enthralled. And I was worried about the outcome, but it was fun and I enjoyed it immensely. All was fine in the end!
The Second book was just as good as the first.. Cant wait to get on to the third.. I read the second novel in 24 hours.. Super read, a real page turner!
Loved reading these books. i have read the first fourteen in the series and enjoyed each one. you feel like they could be your good friends. Laughed through most of the books.
