People sometimes call and best remember Johann Strauss the Younger, son of Johann Strauss the Elder and "the waltz king" for his "The Blue Danube" in 1867.

This Austrian composed light particularly dance music and operettas. He composed well more than four hundred polkas, quadrilles, other types of dance music, several operettas, and a ballet. In his life, people then knew the largely responsible popularity in Vienna during the 19th century.

john mortimer of rumpole of the bailey did this english translation. i knew nothing of the opera save that it was serious, german and about bats.
instead it is funny! i don't know about mortimer's translation, hard to believe the german would be this good.
there are reprinted programs and scores, beautiful illustrations and a terrific intro about the art of translation by mortimer.
