THIS IS THE 2021 EDITION. English offers perhaps the richest vocabulary of all languages, in part because its words are culled from so many languages. It is a shame that we do not tap this rich source more often in our daily conversation to express ourselves more clearly and precisely. Many a vocabulary book lists esoteric words we quickly forget or feel self-conscious using. However, there is a bounty of choice words between the common and the esoteric that often seem to be just on the tip of our tongue. Vocabulary 4000 brings these words to the fore. All the words you need for success in business, school, and life! * 4000 Words Defined * Word Analysis section * Idiom and Usage section * 200 Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes * Concise, practical definitions * Great for the SAT, GRE, TOEFL, and other entrance exams
I think it's funny how he states he's included words with common usages we should all already know but with important-to-know, less common usages, and then includes only the common usages which we already know.
I got the impression the author not only didn't care about the writing of this book, but didn't write it himself, entirely. I am guessing he had an intern go look up words on a list he wrote and forgot to tell the intern to include the less common usage of those words with well known common ones.
Or he didn't pay attention to what he was writing and included the wrong usages himself. And his editor didn't care either.
I also found the backwards "4000" on the cover amusing. Actually by the cover alone, I was prepared for this absolutely careless and useless book. I gave a copy to my 14 year old niece and she said it was useless, too, that she already knew just about everything in it. I believe her. She's precocious, and the book is backward.
Have I expressed enough how strongly I detest this book yet?
Obviously this was a book crafted to fit a market-not well read, highly literate people but perhaps busy professionals who didn't have the benefit of a well-rounded, liberal arts education but who make enough money to waste on self-help books (this is really a sort of self-help book, don't you think?) to help them feel faster and more productive. Or something. I don't know. I just hate this book.
