Book sixteen in the Cattle Valley Series Despite the eighteen year age difference, Sammy Lee wants his new boss, Assistant Fire Chief, Leo Burkowski. Living and working side by side at the firehouse several days a week is wearing on Lee's control. When Leo asks for his help with a special project, Sammy can't take it anymore and makes his move. Although Sammy is playing for keeps, Leo refuses to think of the relationship as anything more than a passing affair. Age has been an issue in the past, and although Leo's attracted to the younger man, he's learned the hard way to keep his heart out of it. Will the heat generated between the two men be enough to melt Leo's resolve, or will Sammy's hopes go down in a blaze of disappointment?
This book fits the series well: it has a slightly "difficult" relationship combined with real emotions. In this volume Carol Lynne approaches the fairly common situation of partners with a large age difference.
While all the arguments in favor and against are well known, these two characters give the situation their own personal slant. Leo has been hurt by his (same age) partner destroying his self-confidence when he left him for a much younger man. Not only that, it turned out Leo's ex wasn't even faithful during their relationship. Sam has finally discovered a man he can really relate to and that is important enough for him to pursue Leo with everything he has.
I loved the way the two stubborn men approached their relationship step by step, which makes sense, but is so often forgotten "in the heat of the moment". There was plenty of "heat" too, though, so it was a great book all around. I'll repeat what I say when finishing each of these volumes: I hope this series will continue for a long time to come!
Something felt missing to me and I don't know what and I'm clueless to figuring it out, but not completely right now. There is the drama I'll give it that but with other characters and not the main ones it was inflicted on persay. Not like in her other books. I've always enjoyed reading Carol's books but felt a tad detached from feeling the connection that links, the bonding that should run deep between Sammy and Leo. The intensity of the relationship wasn't there for me. At least not in this story as it was in all the others.
Carol's stories are always creative and being very well written is what I based my rating on in itself.
Loved this book! Sweet and heartwarming story :) I like age gap and Leo's insecurities were portrayed very sympathetic. Sammy's adorable :) And I'm hooked on Neil and Ben's story - now I need to read the next book asap!
So much happened in this book. I loved the two main characters but i became more interested in two side plots leading to future books that I will have to read ASAP
Sammy has been wanting Leo since the first time he watched a show with him at the Fire House. Leo's ex hurt him in the past so his self conscious about his body now that he's getting older.
Sammy wares Leo down and even though takes some time for Leo to see things the way that Sammy does he starts and by the end he's not as up tight and self conscious about his body.
Leo and Sammy really hit off when started working on a chilli cook off together which was fun. Reverend Casey won the cook off.
There where side stories as well. The lead into Zac's story and Neil's story as well. They got me interested in what happened in both cases.
Carol always knows how to get and keep attention. The sex was hot as always and there definitely something special between Sammy and Leo.
Really sweet how Leo was self-conscience about his age. After a while, Sammy is finally able to show Leo that his feelings are real and that age does not matter.
I love a good age gap story as much as the next person and this was a very well written one covering a lot of the insecurities an older partner might have
Leo and Sammy work together at the Firehouse and despite the fact that he wants the other man, Leo is fairly determined to keep his distance. Past experiences with an unfaithful partner and an eroded self esteem in regards to his age and looks have done a number on Leo and its just better, and safer, if he keeps his distance. Sammy knows there’s a difference of almost two decades in age between him and his boss but he couldn’t care less; being younger doesn’t mean he’s a kid and he’s certainly old enough to know what he wants. When the opportunity presents itself for him to make a move, Sammy grabs it with both hands but now that he’s got the man he wants, he needs to convince Leo to let Sammy keep him.
After reading so many books in this series, I think its safe to say that I know what I like and what I don’t in regards to the storylines and the characters, respectively. I don’t usually read a great many May/December pairing books, not because they’re bad or anything, but because the stories themselves don’t always appeal to me. Luckily, I enjoyed this one quite a bit and found it to be an overall nice read. Sammy was no snot nosed kid looking for someone he could call daddy, he’s a thirty year old man that knows exactly what he wants and has no problems in going to get it and I liked that about him. What kind of surprised me was that Leo was such a hard sell; don’t mistake me, the story was full of near insta-love and feel good feelings, but Leo just couldn’t understand why Sammy would want some one as ‘old’ as him. There were quite a few insecurities he and Sammy had to work through due to Leo’s ex, and I understood that, but I will admit that it got a little old after a while.
Like most of the series, this book was fairly low on the angst scale and what was there was pretty much focused on other people and the set ups for future books so if you enjoy your books on the lighter side of things, this would be a good fit. Overall I enjoyed the story, adored Sammy, and will probably read this one again in the future. Like the rest of the series, its recommended you read the books in order but you could probably read this as a standalone without too much issue.
This one was Sammy and Leo's story... Sammy, being lots younger than Leo (this is a running theme in this series) Leo had a problem with his age given that his last partner who he'd spent 18 years with cheated on him with every young guy he could find. Luckily we don't get to meet that fine character but we can see where the ghosts of his infidelity are front a center. Sammy doesn't care a bit about Leo's age or the fact that his body looks older or whatever hangups Leo had, he just loves him for him. I love that about the guys in this series, they fall in love quick and there is no doubting it.
My heart broke for Neil, I can't wait for his stuff to get worked out, he's a young one too... but he's had his heart set on the one guy who pushed him away, now after a devistating accident, Leo, the only one Neil had confided in called him and that guy has come back, can't wait to see how it all unfolds!
Also very confused about Zack, really hoping him and Jakob get their heads out! Loving it, can't stop now... on to the next!
Another great addition to Cattle Valley by Carol Lynne. Leo has alot to overcome in his thinking, especially in regards to relationships and younger men. As we get older we tend to forget that we have something to offer a new partner, especially after suffering at the hands of the last person who we loved. The longer a relationship goes on the harder it is to believe in a new start, especially with someone younger. Sammy does a wonderful job helping Leo to see that age is just a number, he deserves happiness in his life and someone who will be a true partner.
This was #16 in the CV series and the first one where I felt a bit bored. I guess after reading #13 (and all the drama) this one just felt a bit flat. Not a lot of angst or sexual tension - just kinda dull. The two main characters didn't really hit a spark for me and that seems to be the root of my lack of enthusiasm. Nothing really wrong with the story - just not as entertaining as the others in my opinion.
OH Leo and Sammy... this book was one I loved! Leo has a prolem with the 18 year age difference between him and Sammy even though Sammy doesn't. With Leo at 48, that puts Sammy at the ripe old age of 30. Just because there is an age difference doesn't mean that the younger party isn't old enough to know what they want and to go after it.
I really enjoyed this book and when Leo decided to let loose and give Sammy a chance, the fireworks were awesome! I love this couple!
This one was what I expected, but it was a bit short for the price. I didn't get as emotionally involved with these characters as I normally do with Lynne's men; however, she has laid the groundwork for two new couples that will surely bring a good deal of angst to their stories. I do love some angst.
I didn't really care for this book. There was zero chemistry between Leo and Sammy. And Leo bitching about his saggy balls got on my nerves after a while. These books aren't long but I found myself skimming, I was so bored with the story. I'm hoping Neil's story is better than this one.
