Martin James Kettle is a British journalist and author. The son of two prominent communist activists Arnold Kettle (best remembered as a literary critic, 1916–86) and Margot Kettle (née Gale, 1916–95), Martin Kettle was educated at Leeds Modern School and Balliol College, Oxford University.

A description of the riots in ‘81. The explanations and examination of the causes are, well, very 1982. The majority of the book is spent on the riot and reports of the riots. The explanation as to the beginning of the riots have only a base understanding and doesn’t go into the deeper contextual issues. The conclusion is in my view, the most insightful part of the entire book, having glanced over issues prior.

A book and social commentary about the riots across British cities in the early 1980s. It was written not long after the riots so is a bit of its time but interesting nonetheless
